MP to investigate Dr Kelly's death
MP to investigate Dr Kelly's death

Hélène Mulholland
Friday May 19, 2006

A backbench MP is to investigate the "unanswered questions" from the official inquiry into the death of weapons scientist Dr David Kelly.

The former Liberal Democrat environmental spokesman Norman Baker today revealed his decision to stand down from the shadow cabinet two months ago was based on a quest to establish the "truth" behind Dr Kelly's death. Mr Baker said he wanted to return to the issue because the 2003 Hutton inquiry had "blatantly failed to get to the bottom of matters".

He vowed to question ministers and to unearth new facts in a bid to establish the "truth" of the case.

Dr Kelly was found dead on July 18 2003 after being named as the possible source of a BBC story on the government's Iraq dossier.

The David Kelly Story: Turning Murder into Suicide
29 November 2003

by Rowena Thursby

...

What is striking in Nicholas Hunt's account of Dr Kelly's death is the impression he creates of blood everywhere: blood on Kelly's jacket, on his trousers, on his left wrist, on the palm of his right hand, on the right side of his neck, and on the right side of his face. But actually he is not talking of large amounts - only of small patches smeared on the body and clothing.

Contrast this with the paramedics' assertion that, in their professional view, there was very little blood around for an arterial bleed. Normally an artery (which Hunt says was "completely severed") would produce copious amounts of blood spurting from the wound. Yet to quote paramedic Vanessa Hunt:

"....the amount of blood that was around the scene seemed relatively minimal and there was a small patch on his right knee, but no obvious arterial bleeding. There was no spraying of blood or huge blood loss of any obvious loss on the clothing."

PC Franklin, one of the police constables at the scene, reported blood being "puddled around". However, this was not what the paramedics saw contemporaneously. Vanessa Hunt and David Bartlett worked much closer to the body than the two police constables; had there been blood puddled around when they unbuttoned Kelly's shirt to put the electrodes on his chest, they would have been practically kneeling in it. Vanessa Hunt also commented "On his left arm...there was some dry blood"....." - only some blood, while Bartlett expressed surprise there was not more blood on the body itself, suggesting that is what he would expect to have found with an arterial bleed.

Kelly spoke of dying in the woods
August 23, 2003

British weapons expert David Kelly predicted he would be "found dead in the woods" five months before he apparently committed suicide in a forested area, an inquiry into his death has been told.

A senior British diplomat, David Boucher, told the Hutton inquiry that Dr Kelly had predicted his own death if Britain invaded Iraq, in a conversation with him in February, about a month before the war started.

Mr Boucher, Britain's permanent representative to the UN Conference on Disarmament, said that, at the time, he believed Dr Kelly was concerned about being seen as a "liar" by Iraqi contacts, whom he had encouraged to co-operate with UN weapons inspectors before the war.

"I thought he might have meant that he was at risk of being attacked by the Iraqis in some way," Mr Boucher said. But, after Dr Kelly's death, he realised the scientist "may have been thinking on different lines".

Kelly 'warned of dark actors' games'
19 July, 2003

Iraq weapons expert Dr David Kelly reportedly warned of "many dark actors playing games" in an e-mail sent hours before he bled to death from a slashed wrist.

The message, sent to a journalist (Judith Miller), appeared to refer to officials within the Ministry of Defence and British intelligence agencies with whom he had sparred over interpretations of weapons reports, according to the New York Times.

Dr Kelly disappeared two days after being questioned by the Commons foreign affairs select committee.

But his e-mail gave no indication he was depressed and said he was waiting "until the end of the week" before judging how his appearance before the committee had gone, the newspaper said.

34. someone should run the numbers on all the convenient and coincidental
deaths and suicides that seem to occur with members of bushco* and the bfee on the periphery. I'm trying to phrase this as gentle as possible, as I don't want to piss off Agent Mike:hi: I suspect, as with the election numbers, the odds tend to indicate MIRACULOUS COINCIDENCES. I'm just saying...

I was going to insert the tinfoil hat emoticon, but I won't play into the meme. I believe these bastards are probably guilty of or accessories to just about everything underhanded and diabolical suspected of them. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. One need only take a good look at rummy to realize there ain't no soul behind those eyes. Death and destruction are only a means to an end.

In the long run, it well may be the Kelly affair the delivers the coup d'grace, at least to tony blair. As a whole, the Brits don't seem to be as brain dead as Americans.

Edited on Fri May-19-06 02:30 PM by Blue_Roses
it's like something out of a Robert Ludlum novel. They were too quick to "decide" it was suicide and on top of that, didn't the family have doubts too. Dr. Kelly was anticipating the upcoming wedding of his daughter. Is this a man who was suicidal?

Was he afraid for his life? Yes. Suicidal no.

And that is what makes this particularly interesting, because Kelly and the outing of Plame more or less happened in the same period and Dr. Kelly was the leading figure against the British government.

31. Makes me wondeer...
I know that the intelligence agencies have people embedded all throughout American society. Given her actions with regards to Wilson/Plame, and her propaganda articles in the NY Times, it seems reasonable to assume that Miller is/was an intelligence asset. So, Dr. Kelly was communicating with the very people who killed him. How ghoulish is that?

(and also... how do these people live with themselves?)

11. "Have you got blood on your hands, Prime Minister?"
Edited on Fri May-19-06 02:39 PM by Minstrel Boy
20 Jul 2003

IT MAY come to be seen as the defining moment of his premiership.

With the brutal questions: "Have you got blood on your hands, Prime Minister? Are you going to resign?" hanging in the air, Tony Blair appears to freeze in front of the world’s cameras.

His face ashen, the man who is supposedly never flustered by the media simply stares into space, silent, exhausted, apparently beaten.

For journalists used to an effortlessly relaxed, urbane public style, it is a shocking sight, all the more stark when compared with Blair’s rapturous reception in front of the US Congress only two days earlier.

After several seconds, which feel like an eternity, the Prime Minister is eventually saved at this press conference in the Japanese spa resort of Hakone by an intervention from his hosts. But the damage has been done.

37. hmmm....that judith lady
glad to see this thread still has steam.
I wanted to comment yesterday, but RL is sometimes distracting '-)

This report is news to me:
"IT MAY come to be seen as the defining moment of his premiership.

With the brutal questions: "Have you got blood on your hands, Prime Minister? Are you going to resign?" hanging in the air, Tony Blair appears to freeze in front of the world’s cameras.

When reading this yesterday, my thoughts connected immediately to
bush's 7minutes of paralysis on 9/11; it's as if both world leaders had
"WTF" moments realizing those game playing "dark actors" mean business
and they're the guys in control. Both moments reflect a dawning for both
bush & blair that it's only their job to give us voters the impression they -
our elected leaders - are in control. (They're slow on the uptake...)

confession: I watch 24 (fan of Keifer). This season's plot seems more than
ever, art imitating life. The actor playing the president is a hybrid of nixon
and bush; there's a cartel - dark actors - orchestrating US policy, and the
president finds himself with blood on his hands...the plot is shifting now,
and last weeks episode lamely wrapped up the national threat and moved
onto another one. Why do I bring up this tv show? Like X-files did, this
show dramatizes the conspiracy theories about "dark actors" pulling strings
on global policy, however 24 puts the US presidency into their story line.
There have been several moments in the most recent series plot when the
tv hybrid presidential reactions recalled (for me) real life "WTF" presidential
moments - namely when andrew card interrupted My Pet Goat - and now
blair's blood-draining-from-his-face moment.

...onto to judith miller. Of all the email responses to which Dr. Kelly replied expressing
gratitude for the persons support (during the difficult time he was outed as BBC's
source and questioned in parliment), his response to Judith Miller shines a light on the
fear he was experiencing - all the other responses sort of put a happy face on
the situation by expressing his hopes that he would be in Iraq doing the "real
work" in the coming week. What kind of relationship did he really have with her?

So now Judith reveals her regrets of not running her pre 9/11 story. Why now?
Is she playing both sides? Is she an intelligence asset gone sour? Why did
Dr. Kelly trust Judith enough to make a revealing comment about "dark actors?"
Did she get her exclusive status by the govt. to hunt for WMD's because of
what Kelly told her, i.e., she participated in the "dark actor's" game just to
get the scoop of her career? Was she putting on her own act playing "Find
the WMD's" for the NYTimes? Does she now know too much and is her recent
story a signal saying, "don't fuck w/me"? Am I giving her too much credit?
Can she be that conniving, clever, manipuulative, self-preserving AND brave?
Why did she NOT out Valerie Plame, yet go to jail? Protection? Get her WMD
story on paper, preserved and now secured in some secret place? I don't know
too much about Judith Miller's career, whether or not she's written other stories
that bolster government propaganda...were there other's besides her WMD hunt series?

In any case, who's going to be the first to come out with a rock-your-world expose'?
Miller or Libby?
Or Baker?

please refresh my memory about 2 scientists here in the US....one jumped (was pushed) from the roof of the Watergate...and the other man encountered something similar.

I don't remember the story....and I want to read up on these 2 men who were possibly murdered. I believe they were scientists and maybe they were CIA or State.

With this current evil regime, it's practically impossible to keep up with all their murders and assorted other felonies.

30. Yes, I remember these stories
One man was a long time CIA/Intelligence analyst and policy adviser to something like six U.S. presidents. He was given the medal of freedom for covert work done during the cold war. I remember reading an article written by David Brooks about him when he died. I even wrote in a response to the article questioning why Brooks wasn't more alarmed about his 'suicide,' but got no response. Sorry, but I don't have the mans name.

He had begun to go public in his criticisms of U.S. policy with regards to Iraq, and the next thing you know... he end up dead at Watergate (there's that name again... poker, prostitutes, dirty tricks and murder. My what an address). Interestingly, the coroner ruled the death a suicide, even though no one saw it happen. Absolutely, I believe that he was murdered by the same people who murdered Dr. Kelly. Wilson and his wife are probably lucky to be alive today. There were also a number of other individuals who ended up suspiciously dead around that time. I remember reading of an army colonel who was shot outside of the U.N. building in New York right around that time. He too was a vocal opponent of preemptive war.

This is why we need to retake congress this year. The pugs are right in all of their electoral scare mail. If they do lose congress, the dems will have the constitutional authority to investigate... and investigate they will. And when they do, they'll literally find dead bodies lying all over the place. Could get ugly.

38. The '06 Elections are crucial....I don't think our
nation has faced such a crisis...EVER! We are well on our way to becoming a one-party authoritarian government....just like the old Soviet Union. And so many people I talk to are absolutely unaware....either they're too busy working trying to keep their heads above water or they're just are too frightened to face the truth.

What probably saved Wilson's life is that he was a republican....in fact, his uncle, Pete Wilson, was once governor of California.

We have to reclaim Congress in '06....at least one of the chambers. Otherwise, I am going to think seriously of leaving the country in search of one that has a Democracy. I have a feeling that the next step of the pugs is to start arresting dissenters....like us.

I do so want my Democracy back!

39. We are in a big crisis
But the nation has faced worse before and come out of it. The problem is that it usually takes a national catastrophe on the order of a major war (i.e. 'the war to end all wars') or the great depression. Not something to look forward to, but it often takes something that profound to wake the sensibilities of ordinary voters. Your comparison to the former USSR is interesting but it's not how I would describe the direction we are drifting. I think a better comparison would be Mexico, which is nominally a democracy, but in reality is a plutocracy where the elections are easily and regularly manipulated. If all else fails, just kill the front runner.

However, your comparison to the USSR does strike a cord with me in another way. Not so much with the mechanisms of government, but with regard to foreign policy, it seems to me that we have become the very image of the Soviet Union that I was taught to fear while growing up. They were the ones who supposedly wanted to dominate the world and would use any means at it's disposal to further that goal. Fast forward three or four decades and now I find that the U.S. has adopted that very same policy. WTF?

Should progressive people look elsewhere for the freedom to live in a truly democratic nation? It's a good question that I have asked myself many times. But I always come up with the same conclusion: where would that be? Canada? Nope... they have more problems that we do. The French Canadians want out, so do the native americans. The west coast also wants independence and they are very conservative in many ways. Their idea of freedom of the press would shock many americans. How about France? I think events of the last year have shown that France is a very unstable place (and no place to non frenchmen). England and Australia are becoming very authoritarian, and I don't trust Germany or the nordic countries to maintain their recent policies. So where to go? It's better to stay here and fight the good fight as long as we can. The only thing that will make me consider emigration would be if the pugs maintain power and start up the draft again to further their plans of world domination. I have a young son and I'll be damned if I'll see him die for halliburton and the investment class. To save his life, I'd leave in a skinny minute.

As for Joe Wilson being Republican, that didn't seem to help the other men who ended up dead. They were all republicans too. That's what's so disturbing to me. I can understand taking out your opposition, but to kill your own is psycho.

40. I didn't realize the other two were republicans.
Damn.

This impending financial disaster may wake up a ton of Americans....but I don't see this Depression as the 'nice' one we had in the '30's where many folks were still farming and could feed themselves. I don't see people standing in nice orderly lines to receive an apple, do you? And maybe I'm underestimating our citizenry.

I worry about a huge crackdown on dissent....I had no idea that technology was so advanced as far as tracking and monitoring us...I can see the neocons bearing down on folks from MoveOn, DailyKos, DU. The government could make life very, very difficult for individuals. I guess that's why I am so focused on Elections of '06....winning the House or Senate would throw a big wrench into their 'Grand Plan.' We could start to investigate! Subpoena Power! Oh, I would be dancing in the streets! Hell, I'd move to DC and help in any way possible to put these lying cheats in jail.

As far as leaving (if '06 doesn't go our way)...I was thinking of a small little country. Now, I haven't done much research but I've heard that lots of folks were heading to Costa Rica. (And I studied French like a fool....instead of Spanish). If the government started to jail dissenters, I would want out. Switzerland? Of course, they seem a bit uppity with all of those banks and money. Hell....maybe just moving to a Blue State would be enough...get lost up in Northern California in Mendocino County.

All of this energy and money we spend on war...what a total waste of humankind, isn't it? Don't let your children get caught in that mess. We can all learn Spanish if the draft is reinstituted and head for Costa Rica. Cervasa? Beer in Spanish?

29. I hope the case gets busted wide open
Dr. Kelly's death probably bothered me more than any other aspect of the whole Iraq war mess. Tens of thousands of people have died, the U.S. is becoming an dead beat economy, and the U.S. military has been completely marginalized and undone... but this one mans fate has bothered me more. Why? Because they ate one of their own. Dr. Kelly was part of the government/military/intelligence establishment. He was highly respected and prominent. His death was virtually in public, yet nothing happened. To me, that was the loudest message possible. Oppose the U.S. government and you end up dead... no matter who you are or what you've done in the service of your country.

I have never had any doubts that he was murdered, and when the British government white washed the investigation, I broke completely with Blair. Perhaps someone should remind Blair that Dante's lowest circle of hell is reserved for those who break trust. When we start devouring our own, all is lost.
