Iran eyes badges for Jews Law would require non-Muslim insignia
Edited on Fri May-19-06 09:09 AM by seriousstan
Human rights groups are raising alarms over a new law passed by the Iranian parliament that would require the country's Jews and Christians to wear coloured badges to identify them and other religious minorities as non-Muslims.

"This is reminiscent of the Holocaust," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis."

Iranian expatriates living in Canada yesterday confirmed reports that the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical "standard Islamic garments."

The law, which must still be approved by Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.

19. Define "standard Islamic garments"
Cause they don't dress the same in North-Africa than in Saudi Arabia, or Persia, or Indonesia.

This story reeks...

Iran report of Holocaust-style badges questioned
2006-05-19 09:06:12

The National Post is sending shockwaves across the country this morning with a report that Iran's Parliament has passed a law requiring mandatory Holocaust style badges to identify Jews and Christians.
But independent reporter Meir Javdanfar, an Israeli Middle East expert who was born and raised in Tehran, says the report is false.
"It's absolutely factually incorrect," he told The New 940 Montreal.
"Nowhere in the law is there any talk of Jews and Christians having to wear different colours. I've checked it with sources both inside Iran and outside."
"The Iranian people would never stand for it. The Iranian government wouldn't be stupid enough to do it."
Political commentator and 940 Montreal host Beryl Waysman says the report is true, that the law was passed two years ago.
"Jews should wear yellow strips, Christians red strips, because according to the Iranian mullahs, if a Mulsim shakes hands with a non-Muslim he becomes unclean."

The National Post cites Iranian expatriots living in Canada as its primary source on the story.
The Post story can be read here: http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=11fbf4a8-282a-4d18-954f-546709b1240f&k=32073

12. Source? Iranian expatriates? Enough said.
I like the way Simon Wiesenthal Center jumped on the story. Stories like this let us see certain groups and individuals for what they really are and where they stand. In the real world or on these boards. Wouldn't you agree seriousstan?

16. What rhetoric?
I could have guessed this was cheap propaganda even before I saw the "Iranian expatriates" bit, and I don't have a fancy PhD. Its called a healthy common sense. What I want to know is how folks at Simon Wiesenthal Center didn't see it.

17. It's been DEBUNKED. -- Look here...
Edited on Fri May-19-06 09:58 AM by Julius Civitatus
Apparently this info is not verified anywhere, and middle eastern experts say it's not true.

http://www.940news.com/locale.php?news=2512

The only ones vouching for this story are the Conrad Black rag, and their unnamed "Iranian expatriates."

Sounds familiar?

No wonder Jewish groups are demanding that the neocons stop using them as a justification to go into Iran. It seems very clear the strategy they are following, similar to the strategy they used in the run-up to Iraq:

  • Feed blatantly false info to a few sources (like Judith Miller in the NYT), which will be published without verification.

  • Then use that false report as "evidence" that country "x" is a grave danger

  • Rinse and repeat.

Within days you'll see this false story reprinted and spread all over the right-wing media and the wingnutosphere. Wait and see.

23. Boy Do They Need America to Hate Iran
One article after the other to get us into another fucking war of greed. I hate these people using bigotry like this. This really hurts our efforts in exposing bigotry where and when it really exists. But for the purposes for war... it worked in getting a dipshit into office to a point.

Pajama Bottoms
Posted by James Wolcott

<snip>

"I recognize that it is not always easy to be fastidious about the company one keeps. You can find yourself being introduced to the most awful ogre at a party, someone who may regard you with equal disdain, forced to shake hands and grimace a smile because refusing to do so would provoke a "scene" that could wend its way into Page Six. Or you may find yourself at a dinner party adjacent to someone you vowed you'd never be trapped indoors with again, all because the host or hostess conveniently "forgot" to tell you Satan's playmate had been invited.

Those things happen.

But I don't understand why someone as politically keen as The Nation's David Corn would lend his name to the editorial board of Pajamas Media, the greatest assembly of conservative deadbeats since Jonah Goldberg's last fondue party. What an illustrious roster of ideological utensils make up Pajamas' masthead: Michael Barone...John Podhoretz...Tim Blair...and this inveterate stirpot, whose presence all decent men and women should shun until proper disinfectant can be found. By allowing his name to be slated on the editorial board, Corn is letting himself be used as a figleaf enabling Pajamas to pretend that it's a bipartisan effort instead of what it so flagrantly is, a neocon popstand.

Does Corn really want to be associated with fun blogs like Little Green Footballs and Gates of Vienna ("At the siege of Vienna in 1683 Islam seemed poised to overrun Christian Europe. We are in a new phase of a very old war")? I guess he does, because he'll be appearing on a panel at Pajamas' gala conference in November in Manhattan, where Roger L. Simon and company will break out the ginger ale and announce their new monicker. Then everybody will adjourn to invade Syria, if they can arrange transportation."

Edited on Fri May-19-06 10:57 AM by Minstrel Boy
is The National Post, Canada's neocon house organ. It's been a beating the drums for war with Iran for months.

Until corroborated by a reliable source, I consider the story suspect.

on edit: please read post #9 above for why it's bullshit.
