Poll: 25% believe they've been wiretapped

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- One in four Americans believe that the government has wiretapped their phone calls, according to a CNN poll released Thursday.

Telephone interviews with 1,022 adult Americans were conducted by Opinion Research Corporation Tuesday and Wednesday amid a nationwide debate over government eavesdropping on phone calls to fight the war on terror.

The poll indicates that the American public tends to support actions undertaken by the National Security Agency, but citizens appear to be concerned that the government is taking its surveillance programs too far.

...

Nearly two-thirds of those polled think it is likely that the government has been listening to conversations of U.S. citizens not suspected of terrorism without first getting a court order allowing that eavesdropping.

4. CNN does it again, uses a misleading headline while leaving
the key numerical number as the last paragraph:

Nearly two-thirds of those polled think it is likely that the government has been listening to conversations of U.S. citizens not suspected of terrorism without first getting a court order allowing that eavesdropping.

An objective news outlet would have led with those numbers not buried them but CNN is so far from objective it is beyond pathetic.

7. While not directly targeted....
...I do feel that someone somewhere in the NSA has seen my name come up more than once. Either through filtered e-mails, posts on this board, or IM's. So yeah, I feel like the Government has spied on me.

13. I'm not sure that
the ones who feel that they have been wiretapped are saying anything noteworthy. They might have heard some noise while talking on the phone, or other mysterious happenings. Or, maybe they are paranoid.

But, does anyone really know what the NSA would consider to be reason to eavesdrop? We don't, and that's what is so unnerving. Who are they focusing on, and why? We don't know. That's why some average, benign, people might be wondering "could they be spying on me?"

15. Do they need a reason?
Heck, the last time I made a call from Japan to my mother in the States, to wish her a happy birthday, we both heard all sorts of clicks and other assorted strange background noises that we had never heard on previous phone calls.

12. I doubt that many people are of interest - the NSA only has
so many employees - they can't be listening to that many people. If they include the FBI regarding criminal cases, maybe.

16. Whoa! That'd be over MGB or Stasi surveillance levels
It's not that the NSA has the resources to effectively monitor 70,000,000 people, but so many think they do! This absolutely has to be seen as a vote of No Confidence in the 4th Amendment.

It's not as if they were all on the phone at the same time is it?

Now ... there's an idea!

We can make the protest even more effective by flushing toilets at the same time we're making the call -- it could work!

100% of the America should think they've had their communications listened to or recorded, because they have been!
