Mayor likes benefits for domestic partners
But mayor-elect not sure about covering partners of city workers

Mike Prager
Staff writer

Mayor John Powers on Tuesday endorsed a proposal from Spokane Human Rights Commission members to extend city employee benefits to unmarried domestic partners.

"I see this as a simple question of, are we treating our employees fairly, equally, justly," Powers said. "I think it's an employment fairness issue."

Proponents are seeking a City Council member to sponsor a draft of the ordinance, written through a committee of the commission, and to place it before the council as early as next month.

Powers leaves office at the end of December.

2. A brave stand to take
Spokane isn't exactly a hotbed for liberalism. Good for him. I notice he's leaving office, though.
