'The Da Vinci Code' India release in trouble
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/redir.php?jid=15a4fee061c047d5&cat=c08dd24cec417021

I have received representations from many organisations against the film. We will watch the film Wednesday and then decide," Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Rajan Dasmunsi told reporters here.

The minister's statement came a day after the country's censor board cleared the release of the move, albeit with an "Adults Only" rating.

Dasmunsi said he would examine whether the controversial film hurts the sensitivity of Christians in the country.

The government of Goa, meanwhile, passed a resolution seeking a ban on the film.

2. Well, rottentomato.com reviews are all negative toward it.
Appears the film, itself, just isn't that good and may bomb at the box office.

6. Audiences in Cannes were canning it, too.
A CNN article a friend sent me earlier today said the audience broke into laughter at a serious part of the movie as what was going on seemed so ridiculous.

Ah, here it is:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/17/da.vinci/index.html

At Cannes, one scene during the film, meant to be serious, elicited prolonged laughter from the audience, and when the credits rolled, there was no applause, only a few catcalls and hisses. Things were no better Stateside, where the film screened for critics in New York.

8. I think they canned 'The Brown Bunny' too.
They are a tough crowd, no? I love Vincent Gallo, though. I've not seen The B.B. but I wouldn't mind...

5. It may deserve to bomb, but the publicity has been rock solid
They'll get good opening weekend figures, even if it fades from screens quicker than usual. There's just too much talk about it.

4. not like it is a challenging book after all
While it may be 'popular' that does not make it any more then a pot-boiler at best. it certainly broke no real new ground (jesus as a married man, secret catholic groups, Masons behind every conspiracy, etc...) nor does it take more then a few hours to read. All in all, Dan brown is no JK Rowlings even (sorry, I like the Potter books, but mispronounced Latin as magic spells? Very undemanding reading, good for kids or a lazy afternoon). Call me elitist but books are important to me.

7. all this because Jesus got laid.
I am so freaking sick and tired of this. And we think the church has no power and is just anachronistic. Wrong.

11. Well, not our freedom of speech, no.
The US has a much more freewheeling attitude to insulting people's religions, mostly because by the time the insulted religions got big and powerful, religious riots were out of style. In India, where a few dozen people can be killed in a single night of communal violence, they are more controlling.

But here, someone can actually say that the DaVinci Code is the true history of the catholic church, and not only does nobody riot, but nobody even bothers to point out that he's wrong. God Bless America.

12. India has a tough, government sponsored film board. My hubby is Indian
and I asked him once why so much Bollywood and no real risk-taking and he told me that little else can pass the board.

That's what censorship is, gang, and it definitely stifles creativity.
