G.O.P. Voters to Be Target of Radio Ads by Democrats

WASHINGTON, May 16 — House Democrats, trying to capitalize on conservative dissatisfaction with Republicans, are reaching out to Christian voters with radio advertisements critical of Republican proposals to overhaul Social Security.

In a campaign tied to appearances by President Bush on behalf of House candidates later this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has bought time on stations with Christian and conservative audiences to try to remind those who traditionally vote Republican of their party's plan to add private investment accounts to Social Security.

While Republicans have stepped up efforts in recent years to cut into traditional Democratic strength among Catholics, Hispanics and older Americans, among other groups, the radio campaign is a rare effort by Democrats to appeal to a dependable Republican constituency.

"We are going to keep them back on their heels and make them compete for their own base," said Representative Rahm Emanuel, Democrat of Illinois, chairman of the House campaign organization.

2. Oh!... heavens!... no!.... please!....
This sort of thing might spread the vile rumor that the Dems have grown a pair of those nasty old testes and are ready to..... gosh.... say something..... rude.... about the Repubs.

What next? Will the Dems follow the example of that nasty Jon person on The Daily Show and say rude things about Bush?

Probably not.

:sarcasm:

4. moan
Isn't this how the Dems snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the last election cycle? By not appealing to their own base? When are they going to brighten up?

They should be hitting the repukes hard with dirty politics in their ads, find a unifying issue that will turn out their base (like boys kissing in the last election appealed to the fundies) and appealing to anyone else with a clear creed, logic and a plan for America.

As evil as I think Carl Rove (and other strategerists) are, the Dems could take a few pages from their playbook.

If the Dems are going to be content to wander around aimlessly and not stand up and fight for a change, then I have no sympathy for them and America will get what it deserves.

5. They do appear to be stealing a page from the GOP playbook
By appealing to GOP voters on a Democratic issue (preservation of social security), the Democrats are asking the Bush-bots to shake off their torpor and consider who really is fighting for something that affects them directly. It looks like a good strategy to me. Why do you think standing up for social security, the most successful governmental program ever that has rescued millions from poverty, is wandering around aimlessly?
