Gonzales 'not clear' if kin legal

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales admitted yesterday it's "just not clear" if his Mexican-immigrant grandparents settled in the U.S. legally.
The nation's top cop - who is the first Hispanic attorney general - has become a pointman for the White House on divisive immigration reforms President Bush is pushing.

"Three of my grandparents were born in Mexico. They came to Texas," Gonzales told CNN.

Pressed by Wolf Blitzer, Gonzales conceded he didn't know if they sneaked across the border like millions of illegals at issue in the current debate.

4. nah
Even if they did cross the border illegally, they would have been covered by the amnesty law in the 80s, no?

19. Are They Even Alive, Still?
The question may be moot. Unless some righteous fool is going to exhume and ship the bodies of dead illegals to their land of citizenship.

23. If they applied for it.
Some didn't. There were deadlines ... multiple ones, as politicians and others realized illegal immigrants kept saying, "Oh, I didn't know."

He knows. They were illegals. Otherwise he would have proudly stated otherwise.

6. Well, I'm sure, as a man of principal, Gonzales would resign
If it turned out that Gonzales is nothing more than a third generation wetback, I'm sure he'd voluntarily return to Mexico, right?

Smrph!

Grmphlbrp!

{giggle}

Bwahahahahahaha!

Nope, I knew I couldn't do that with a straight face!

7. Then perhaps his grandparents are really Irish in which case they
are welcome to stay (there is another LBN thread about illegal Irish immigrants).

8. Well, gooooooolly. How could this be? This sounds so so so
Clarence Thomas like. Benefiting by affirmative action and now against it. Gonzales benefits by his kin's bravery to find a better life, now wants to have drones used to stop them from coming. It's so so so.... Republican.

10. I met Gonzales almost thirty years ago at a dinner party in Dallas.
He was fresh out of law school, and vehemently opposed to Affirmative Action even then. He felt like his academic success in college and law school were due to his own special brilliance. He was unable to see that he was a beneficiary of government largesse, a benefactor of LBJ's great society. He certainly was brilliant and an excellent student, but his college work was not superior to mine or others like me. I was delighted to get into medical school in Dallas, but there is no way I could have gotten into an Ivy League grad school, much less pay for it. Even then, he showed a lack of critical thinking, a lack of self-examination, and an ego that was insurmountable. At the time, I was pleased to know that aa was working, even though its recepients might not be capable of realizing their good fortune.

But if we start demanding competence, there won't be anybody left in DC or anywhere else in the government. Certainly no one that was appointed, elevated or hired by this misAdministration.

25. And this would be a bad thing how? ;-) Then competent Dems will have less
trouble cleaning and fixing what was destroyed by the incompetent (uncaring and criminal) RepubliCONs that are currently peeing (etc) in "we the people"'s pool and using the US Constitution for toilet paper.

Works for me.

13. It doesn't matter. He is not responsible for what his grandparents did.
If he was born here he is a citizen regardless of what his parents and grandparents did. We should not go down this road regardless of how much we disagree with the man's politics.

17. You can say that about many of us. The only difference is that his
HISTORY is more recent. Yes there is some irony but that is all it is. It should not be a political battering ram.

16. Sorry folks but I completely understand how this could be true
I have no idea if my grandparents came to the US legally or "through the back door". Many Irish did that in the early 1900s.

I detest Gonzales and the entire Bush cabal but I can't blame Gonzales for not knowing about his grandparents' status.

20. I wish my grandparents were here for me to ask
Maybe that's the case with Gonzales, too.

It was never discussed when I was a kid. It was never even thought of.

This is a non-issue, IMHO.

22. Like Thomas and Condi being against affirmative action
Hey, it was okay that it helped THEM, but gods forbid it helps some other minority not them. And... like Mary Cheney, too.

How can these people live with themselves?

24. couldn't any competent genealogist...
...find records of naturalization if they exist? Isn't there some kind of registry of naturalized citizens? It isn't possible for someone of his position not to be able to find those records if the grandparents were naturalized.

to reveal his secrets. Knowledge is power. We can't have someone trying to blackmail the Attorney General.

Honestly, is there anyone out there who takes anything they say seriously anymore? Everything they say is incredulous.

(by the way, I added bigfatliar to my spell check. It has to be a word in this climate).
