On a fence-mending trip to neighbouring Turkey, Jalal Talabani also said he did not expect U.S. forces to risk a crackdown on 5,000 Turkish Kurdish rebels hiding in northern Iraq, despite Washington's promise to Ankara to do so.
''The United States has brought peace and freedom to Iraq, but they are losing sympathy day by day since they are now an occupying force,'' Talabani told CNN Turk. He spoke in English but only the Turkish translation dubbed over it was audible.
''Only Iraqis can bring stability and peace to Iraq.''
Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and rotating head of the Governing Council in Baghdad, said U.S. forces would not pursue Kurdish rebels sought by Turkey as ''terrorists'' because of northern Iraq's mountainous terrain.
