McCain: 'Americans should argue about this war'
Senator urges debate on Iraq in address at Falwell school
Saturday, May 13, 2006; Posted: 2:54 p.m. EDT (18:54 GMT)

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain on Saturday said Americans should argue about the war in Iraq.

The Republican senator from Arizona weighed in the conflict that has killed more than 2,400 U.S. troops in a commencement address at Liberty University, the school founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

As a candidate in the 2000 presidential race, McCain had lambasted Falwell as an agent of intolerance. The former Vietnam prisoner of war, a potential presidential hopeful in 2008, has put aside his differences with the minister, who has large following among Christian conservatives.

"Americans should argue about this war," McCain said. While he defended his support of the Iraq invasion, he said people must engage in debate on the subject.

"If an American feels the decision was unwise, then they should state their opposition and argue for another course. It is your right and your obligation. I respect you for it. I would not respect you if you chose to ignore such an important responsibility.

"But I ask that you consider the possibility that I, too, am trying to meet my responsibilities, to follow my conscience, to do my duty as best as I can, as God has given me light to see that duty."

4. McCain should just shut up. He was one of the biggest
proponents of the current fiasco. I didn't hear him calling for debate when we were going in. Now he's Mr. "Americans should discuss this issue".

He's just another asshole that would say or do anything to be Prez. Witness him mentioning all this at Jerry Falwell's "university". Eat shit and die, McCain.
You have no credibility in my book.

As if he was just born yesterday and had nothing to do with it.

"War with Iraq a bad idea? Why, let's discuss it.....three years after the fact."

What a fucking dick.

9. McCain's 24/7 pandering is painful to behold.

Senator John McCain of Arizona, left, at Liberty University today, with the Rev. Jerry Falwell,
the university's chancellor, whom he once described as an agent of "intolerance."

McCain's giving the commencement address at the New School in New York next. Damn, am I glad I'm not a student there.

13. On Friday McCain said this

“We must win. We must win. We must win,” McCain said. “We must stay the course.”

He said the United States cannot afford to back away from the insurgents.

“They want to drive us out of Iraq and follow us here,” he said.

The other course was not to invade and it's too late for that.

We needed to have this debate before the invasion, but Bush made sure there could not be any debate.

Edited on Sat May-13-06 09:04 PM by Inland
before we jumped in with both feet, somebody should have thought about it and discussed it. Like, a certain senator from AZ. Where was McCain? In with the crowd telling us to get behind the president and shut the fuck up, that's where.

23. *sigh* WHAT happened?
He COULD have opposed the insanity. He almost did. Why did he have to go Bush-bot? Even after 2001, he still spoke out against a few things that the president did. SO CLOSE to bringing sanity into the Republican party, and he just.... went down to Crazy Base World.

What a pissant, useless piece of shit McCain is.

He lost it for me when he crammed his nose into bush's armpit in '00...

What a sick display; as bad as Sammy Davis, Junior cramming his head into Nixon's armpit back in '72. Remember that?

McCain tries to heal rift with the Christian right
At Falwell's school, the senator encourages dissent

By DAN BALZ
Washington Post

LYNCHBURG, VA. - Six years after labeling the Rev. Jerry Falwell one of the political "agents of intolerance," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., delivered the commencement address Saturday at Falwell's Liberty University, where he vigorously defended his support for the war in Iraq while saying that opponents have a moral duty to speak out.

McCain's presence on the campus here was as remarkable as what he had to tell the graduating class of 2006, given his clashes with religious conservatives during his 2000 campaign for president. His appearance continued a rapprochement that has been under way for months with a critical constituency in the Republican Party as McCain prepares for another possible campaign in 2008.

The Arizona senator's speech was shorn of religious references and avoided controversial social issues. Instead, he focused on constitutional principles while touching on themes of humility, patriotism, respect for political opponents and forgiveness that might be relevant to his preparations to seek the Republican presidential nomination again.

The former Vietnam prisoner of war warned of dire consequences if the U.S. mission in Iraq fails.

"Should we lose this war, our defeat will further destabilize an already volatile and dangerous region, strengthen the threat of terrorism and unleash the furies that will assail us for a very long time," he said.
