HS Teacher Claims Whites are Smarter than Blacks
Reported by J.R. Berry

(Cayce) - Inside the walls of Brookland-Cayce High School, you expect students to be treated equally. But a viewer tip led News19 online where a teacher's comments left us asking questions.

"These sorts of things are going to upset people, but the truth can be very upsetting," said Brookland-Cayce High School teacher Winston McCuen.

That truth, at least according to McCuen, is that black people are inferior to whites.

"Intellectually, yes they are," said McCuen. "This has been confirmed over and over, and this is a generalization. Again, there are some blacks who are more intelligent than individual whites. But as a rule, that is true. I-Q tests prove it over, and over and over."

News19's J.R. Berry asked McCuen, "Do you think slavery in America was a good thing? "Yes," said McCuen. "In America there was a rational assessment saying listen, if we give these people freedom right as they are and you have to go back to see how they were, you can't assume they were like us.

J.R. asked, "How were they?" "They were coming out of the jungles," said McCuen. "They had been enslaving each other for centuries in Africa, and in terms of being used to rule of law, they knew none of that."

No doubt about it, Winston McCuen has controversial opinions. But do his views make it into the classroom? He teaches Latin at Brookland-Cayce. He told J.R. that most of his students are white.

J.R. asked," Is this something that enters your classroom, something you tell your students?" "I'm a Latin teacher, so I'm not teaching politics or history," said McCuen. "I'm just teaching Latin."

14. His certification expires next year anyway...
Edited on Fri May-12-06 09:37 PM by jerry611
So they probably will let him finish the year and then won't hire him back...

But technically they can't "fire" him. Because the first amendment protects academic speech. That's the same exact defense used by professors and teachers that compared Bush to Hitler or 9/11 victims to Nazis.
If they fire him because of something he said, he can turn around and sue the school. There is nothing in the constitution that bans hate speech. So they are stuck with him until June, then they can say good-bye.

17. This is separte, I just question his mental competency.
as I would question the competency of a teacher who said all white should be enslaved to blacks. I mean contraversial is one thing...Saying the difering IQ results were not connected to nutritional and lifestyle issues but rather genetic tendency is contravserial, but saying that "as a rule" blacks are worse than whites means he ca't read the fucking chart, he doesn't understand what orange intersect yellow means for the whole chart.
But your right, I have a better idea. Let this professor demonstrate that he means business by showing that the highest on the chart should be masters to the lower by giving up his natural rights and becoming a slave for an Asian American, (who rank "higher" than whites) preferably a mentally retarded one with an IQ of 54.

22. Well he obviously is not a great teacher to begin with
I mean in college I remember professors saying some pretty controversal things (both right and left wing), but at least they did it in a way to provoke thinking on the issues. They encouraged the students to prove them wrong and think about it from different angles and views.

A person's intelligence is not measured by what they know, it is measured by how they think. Knowledge is pieces. And it requires intelligence to put the peices together correctly.

It doesn't appear like this teacher was trying to provoke any kind of thinking. So in that point alone, he's failing as a teacher.

Racist remarks stir talk of change
Lexington 2 will more closely check applicants’ backgrounds, puts teacher on leave

Posted on Sat, May. 13, 2006
By DEVON MARROW

Lexington 2 officials said Friday that a Latin teacher with extreme views on race would not have been hired in 2003 had the district known he had been fired from a previous teaching position ..

Dr. Lonnie Randolph, state NAACP president, .... said he’d received calls from parents who said McCuen mentioned his views in the classroom ..

Buddy Price, Lexington-Richland 5 spokesman, said his district’s personnel office requires each applicant to list previous employers and to describe the reason for leaving those jobs ..

Also, teachers do NOT have true First Amendment tights. Teachers can be fired for all kinds of stuff -- most have a moral clause in their contacts, along with other employment caveats.

58. Exactly. It Takes A Wide Variety of Skills To Succeed in Life
In my experience, inter-personal skills far outweigh raw intellectual or computational skills in terms of overall success. People who communicate well with other people make more money.

In addition, an IQ test just shows where that person's skill level is at a certain point in life. Who is to say that a person cannot obtain more intelligence as they go through life.

I am a black female, and I got a nearly perfect score on the SATs. I also tested with an IQ range of

38. IQ tests
are very generic. There are socio - economic issues that cause problems with ANY underprivliged person.

If a tree branch can hold three people and John weighs twice as much as Adam, and Rachel weighs half as much as Adam, then Rachel, John and Adam can all sit together on the tree branch safely.

If you multiply any two of the following numbers together, your result will be odd number: 9, 11, 3, 7, 17.

40. Just out of curiosity, how are they biased?
I've heard this before, but I have to admit, I'm not sure I agree with it. I remember taking one or two IQ tests when I was a little kid. As I recall, both tests were solely concerned with abstract reasoning, comprised of MENSA-style pattern recognition and numerical sequence questions. There were absolutely no questions on the tests that related in any way to racial or sociological issues. No prior knowledge was needed, and as I recall, the instructions were extremely simple. I am in no way trying to defend the nazi-wannabe teacher in the article, but I'm a little curious as to how a test that focuses exclusively on abstract reasoning can be considered "biased toward white people".

44. They aren't
The test must be biased toward asians, who typically score higher than whites then. It is a race baiting statement not backed up by fact.

The tests underscore patterns of learning that reflect socio-economic situations along with other factors.

That does not mean the idiot in the article is right. IQ testing is not a comprehensive measure of intelligence or "how smart you are".

74. Here is an example from another test
This is not an IQ test, but it will give you an idea of cultural bias in tests.

This item was on the ITBS for 1st grade. They showed a picture of an umbrella with fringe on the edge and the kids were to match it to the word PARASOL. The other choices included UMBRELLA. Well, kids in the US have no idea - at that age - what a parasol is. Every 1st grader I ever gave this test to missed this question. Most adults would probably miss it too.

84. I once knew an entirely competent biologist who never mastered ..
Edited on Sun May-14-06 09:41 PM by struggle4progress
.. simple fractional arithmetic: as a child, he had spent every spare moment actually LOOKING at mosses and ferns and other REAL things in the woods near his home; as a result, he knew quite a lot and reasoned about it cogently, but he did not ever master some elementary pencil and paper skills that IQ tests measure.

I have a friend who is an auto mechanic with utter contempt for all things schoolish: but I've been in his shop when somebody brought in a car, and after listening to the engine a minute he'd say "O, I know exactly what that is," and he would fix it.

Similarly, I've known good artists who were barely able to read and people with facility in multiple languages who had absolutely no interest in (and hence no knowledge of) any of the scientific subjects.

It's hard to eliminate biases from testing, because we seldom recognize our own preconceptions about what every intelligent person should know. Why would a inner city child from a lower income family be expected to predict that the fourth term of the comparison "sprinter:marathon::oarsman:-" should be "regatta"?

When I took the SAT many years ago, there was an essay with related comprehension questions on a topic I had read about often in books I found in my parents' home: those questions didn't test whether I carefully read and understood the essay, but rather tested whether I had been raised in home where such material was easily available to me.

Perhaps it's so difficult to identify the biases in "intelligence" tests, that we cannot hope to eliminate such biases ...

57. Yes, but variance accounted by race still doesn't make up the difference.
Edited on Sun May-14-06 12:21 AM by NoodleyAppendage
IQ measures (particularly verbal IQ scales) are notorious for being culturally insensitive, but performance IQ (typically non-verbal measures) actually does a better job of estimating IQ while minimizing cultural influence. That being said, Asians tend to do better than Caucasians, Caucasians better than African-Americans, and African-Americans have a very slight advantage over Hispanics. These differences have not been attributed to test insensitivity alone and after repeated studies this general mean IQ order holds. Many think that stating the fact is an endorsement of racist reasoning, but as a scientist I cannot ignore the consistent replication. It doesn't mean that any race is inferior to the other and it does not suggest that the differences are genetic or immutable to environmental influence.

BTW - the most widely used IQ measure, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (3rd revision), includes large samples of Asian, African-American, and American Indian individuals for normative comparison.

85. I've never bought that theory. IQ tests have no cultural bias.
How could they? Blacks and whites both can recognize the shape of an object. There is absolutely no cultural reference in IQ tests. There is some math, and there is spatial questions, and logic. How is that unfair to other races? Now, if you're saying that the schools that are predominantly black lag in academics for social reasons, then okay. But the tests aren't unfair. You don't have to be white to recognize shapes or number sequences. I always have thought that people do a huge disservice to blacks by saying that they are not up to tests.. aren't you saying the same thing as that teacher? You need to blame the school system, or frankly the social system that reward poor performance in school for kids of color.

25. Whites tend to have a 20 to 30 point disadvantage to asians...
My son took a college course which examined IQ scores by race which we discussed at length. I don't believe they were able to
come up with an answer as to why the disparities exist. I tend to think the following is a good view.

To quote Robert Todd Carol in the Skeptics Dictionary: "IQ" stands for "intelligence quotient." A person's IQ is supposed to be a measure of that person's intelligence: the higher the IQ number, the greater the intelligence. This is inaccurate, however, since it assumes that there is only one kind of intelligence. Most people recognize that there are some people with fantastic memories, some with mathematical minds, some with musical genius, some with mechanical expertise, some with good vocabularies, some good at seeing analogies, some good at synthesizing, some at unifying, etc. Some people excel at more than one of these behaviors. It would be more accurate to speak of human intelligences than of intelligence. An IQ test, therefore, should be considered a measure of some kinds of intelligence, but not all. The most accurate claim one can make about an IQ test is that it measures IQ.

For an interesting look at this subject see http://skepdic.com/iqrace.html

It matters not how we score but who we are. There are differences in culture and behavior in all groups of man. The key is to love
one another and strive to help one another. That is where we Dems excel.

the are soci-economic. If you compare any race that has had no education and little exposure to knowledge you will get the same results. EVEN the poor in NYC are exposed to so much better edcation, the arts, museums, theatre than poor people living in some southern towns. 32. I'm sure that what this guy says is mostly true ...in his classes.
It's been thoroughly proven that labeling a child affects the outcome for that child.

Latin can be a boring enough subject anyway, even without the knowledge that the teacher despises you and sees you as a savage who should be enslaved.

As for IQ tests, I'll never forget watching my handicapped toddler being given one by a pediatrician who had already decided he was retarded, and was treating him in a bullying, contemptuous manner.

One exercise involved being given wooden blocks, and being assessed on the number he managed to pile on top of each other in a single tower. However he took one look at the rather frightening doctor, took the blocks to a corner, and built a neat fort, constructing himself a solid barricade.

When the doctor left the room to add up the results, scoring him zero on the brick building, my kind hearted kid asked for paper to draw the doctor a picture, "to make him happy again". When the doctor returned, a large sheet of paper was covered with a cartoon story about a child visiting a doctor and turning into a superhero and saving the doctor. When the doctor saw this he got really abusive, saying my husband or I must have drawn it, because he had proved the child was not capable of that.

Then he remembered the low IQ the tests had shown, and changed the way he was talking to us, now putting everything into 1 syllable words. ...
Despite have 4 university degrees between us, if our child was retarded, we obviously were too.

64. That figures. Thanks for the link.
A person's deep-seated beliefs will inevitably affect the way they act.
And when a teacher or other authority figure has negative beliefs about a kid,
the kid will inevitably pick up on it and react accordingly.

I noticed a caucasian student said the teacher was fair, but often people are blind to discrimination for as long as it's not happening to them. I know many white Americans who swear there is no such thing as racial prejudice in America these days.

OK, it's lame enough to say "Whites are smarter than blacks." That's pathetic hogwash right there, weakly buffered with a handwave to IQ testing. But to compound it with "Yes, slavery was a good thing," well, it doesn't take a farking Mensa scholar to figure that as just downright racist. And for a high school teacher to be proclaiming such crap to the local newsmedia... Either he wants to have some kind of racist celebrity status more than his current job, or the schoolboard is openly comprised of white supremacists.

Perhaps McCuen is bucking for his local KKK chapter's PR merit badge?

I would say MOST white high school teachers are stupid (that dude's thinking turned on it's head). Like I know little about writing or anything else that is too refined when it comes to all this schooling hyperbole, but I do know people who do a lot of monumental things are often wrong many times before they ever get to the point of them accomplishments. Training people to be auto-matrons like this so called civil society dictates will only hurt the majority in the long run. Learning to be your own individual in that attempt to thread the needle is as important as anything that can be learned in school as far I have ever seen.

65. This is my biggest gripe with school.
So often the opposite happens, and kids are trained to deny their individuality and try to just be like the rest of their peer group. When it comes to personal accomplishment, more seem to learn, "I just can't do that," than ever learn to enjoy doing things for themselves.

I was an art teacher, and believe creativity in the field that suits you can be a great joy to everyone, if children are encouraged to enjoy the process of creating, rather than having the things they create being judged. Humans, like the animals closest to us, are predisposed to learning through play, and schools should be designed to take advantage of this fact.

I sent a son to a Rudolph Steiner school specially to have his individuality fostered, and found they were just as bad. The teachers were trained to know exactly what constituted proper Steiner individuality, and made a rigid mold of that to force childrens characters and artistic efforts into.

80. To rely on any institution to produce an individual sounds.........
kind of counter intuitive. I read these words in the last paragraph of your post "trained to know exactly what constituted proper Steiner individuality" and all the words except the last seem in the same mode of thinking. As a matter of fact the last one even seems quite out place to me. That being said I have a stepson that I helped raise for the last twelve years.

Our son is quite intelligent but is still home with us going to college. His individuality is different in that he can fit in just like a shadow but at the same time can figure out the damnedest things contrary to most conventional thought in the blink of an eye. I don't try to push him but sometimes nudge him. I accept him for who he is and have no fear at his age of nineteen that he could take care of whatever he needed to if need be.

What I am really saying here is you got to trust your kids will figure out what is best for them eventually. The more you can help yourself by staying out of the middle of it the better off you both will be. The adventure will always eventually be theirs and letting them get an early start if they want should only make sense

P.S. thanks for being an Art teacher, you sound like you would be a good one

in that way.
It produced clones even more efficiently than a regular school ... Steiner clones.

You said "the adventure will always eventually be theirs," and I wholeheartedly agree.

IMO one of the best ways to achieve that is to let them have opportunities to explore on their own.
I'm all for kids having lots of love and support, but I believe we all have a spiritual need for alone time too, to figure out who we are and who we want to be.

Kids are wonderful when they can be who they really are.

60. This tired fallacy, again.
From a biological perspective, there's virtually no genetic difference between human ethnic groups. We of the same species are so genetically similar, no matter what our skin color or hair color might be, that to suggest any group is inherently better or worse in some nebulous measure like "intelligence" is a laugh. Chances are this teacher may be more genetically similar to blacks he's met than those of European extraction he considers to be more intelligent.

All of this took off with the shoddy work done on "The Bell Curve" and it's never gone away. Anyone who buys any of this has little grasp of biology, sociology or statistics.

Blacks must be dumber... they live in those ugly ghettos rather than living in a nice clean suburb with lawns and trees and Hispanic gardeners. Why don't they just move to nicer neighborhoods?

And schools! Did you ever see the schools in those black neighborhoods? Why don't they just build shiny new schools with big parking lots for the kids' Hummers and Beemers?

Just look at at the smart white folks who send their kids to the Ivy League schools and then into politics, where they do such great jobs leading our country. Not like those dumb black people who have to struggle just to eat, and end up in the Army.

This man's immoral behavior is grounds for dismissal, more than if he'd posted revealing pictures of himself online.

He is unfit to have contact with children or young adults of any color, but he is particularly dangerous and menacing to non-white students.

The person who hired him should also be fired for lacking judgement and endangering students. He didn't "slip through" the screening process. The process accepted him. There's no way they could have missed this.

None of these people lost their jobs...

If you want to make an exception and claim that racist speech shouldn't be allowed because it harms society, then who is stop some future president from saying that political speech endangers the country and should also be outlawed?

You start making exceptions to the foundation of the constitution, you open a Pandora's Box that can never be closed.

92. I like this revisionist history....

"They had been enslaving each other for centuries in Africa, and in terms of being used to rule of law, they knew none of that."<<

First, importation of slaves stopped in 1809, or at least "legal" importation. So, when the slaves were actually freed, in 1866 or so, they had been here for nearly fifty years, 'away from the jungle.' Usually, pseudo intellectuals like this will say something to the effect that slavery brought the blacks to civilization, thus improving their lot in life. Like when Mrs. Bush said the people displaced by Katrina "never had it so good."

Now, it is true that much of the 'front end' of the slave trade was done in Africa, by blacks on blacks. But that doesn't absolve American slaveholders in any way, as they were the final customer, and by their demands, furthered and encouraged the trade.

As far as 'rule of law,' what a joke. If the black slaves had no concept of rule of law, it was because they were not protected by it while enslaved, while being subjected to whatever 'rules' the plantation owner considered appropriate, and generally enforced quite brutally. It was bigots like this obviously racist asshole that prevented the blacks from enjoying the benefits of 'rule of law.'

The primary benefit of Freedom of Speech is that it lets assholes like this guy identify themselves. ;)

99. As a Latin teacher--did he discuss Slavery in the Roman Empire?
Edited on Mon May-15-06 08:12 AM by Bridget Burke
It was NOT race based at all. Slaves could be Nubians or blond-haired Anglo-Saxons. So many were Slavic that the word became the root word for Slave in other languages. (In classical Latin, "servus" meant slave.) The Roman Empire had plenty of flaws--but it was NOT racist.

Anyone who fought against Rome was the enemy. But anyone willing to join the military was welcomed--no matter their origin. Freed slaves could become wealthy & were NOT looked down upon because of their race; they may have been considered nouveau riche by the upper classes. But that's just because they'd been slaves.

Many African slaves did NOT come from the jungle but from savannah lands. There was definitely a "rule of law"--all peoples have codes of acceptable behavior. In preliterate societies, they are transmitted orally. Most of us spring from peoples who practiced slavery.

What an idiot.
