CNN >> Poll: (Bill) Clinton outperformed Bush

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/05/12/bush.clinton.poll/

Poll: Clinton outperformed Bush

(CNN) -- In a new poll comparing President Bush's job performance with that of his predecessor, a strong majority of respondents said President Clinton outperformed Bush on a host of issues.

The poll of 1,021 adult Americans was conducted May 5-7 by Opinion Research Corp. for CNN. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Respondents favored Clinton by greater than 2-to-1 margins when asked who did a better job at handling the economy (63 percent Clinton, 26 percent Bush) and solving the problems of ordinary Americans (62 percent Clinton, 25 percent Bush). (Watch whether Americans are getting nostalgic for the Clinton era -- 1:57)

On foreign affairs, the margin was 56 percent to 32 percent in Clinton's favor; on taxes, it was 51 percent to 35 percent for Clinton; and on handling natural disasters, it was 51 percent to 30 percent, also favoring Clinton.

Moreover, 59 percent said Bush has done more to divide the country, while only 27 percent said Clinton had.

3. The surprise to me is not in the fact that people prefer Clinton, but
in the fact that CNN would conduct such a poll and, having done so, would report such Bush-damaging results. This is like Pravda attacking the sitting Soviet premier.

10. I think they've found the true 'floor'...
...to which Dubya's approvals ratings could go. 26% think Dubya's has done a better job of Clinton on the economy ffs. 0.1% could be believed if they've taken advantage of the capital gains reduction, maybe another 0.9% that suddenly cared about such things after the 90's boom. The other 25% though, no hope.

13. ABC News/Washington Post Poll June 2004
"Thinking back to when Bill Clinton was in office, would you say you approve or disapprove of the way Clinton handled his job as president?" – 62% approval

http://www.pollingreport.com/clinton-.htm

Poll: Clinton's approval rating up in wake of impeachment…In the wake of the House of Representatives' approval of two articles of impeachment, Bill Clinton's approval rating has jumped 10 points to 73 percent, the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll shows.

That's not only an all-time high for Clinton, it also beats the highest approval rating President Ronald Reagan ever had…. At the same time, the number of Americans with an unfavorable view of the Republican Party has jumped 10 points; less than a third of the country now has a favorable view of the GOP. Unfavorable 57%

"solving the problems of ordinary Americans (62 percent Clinton, 25 percent Bush)"

bush's approval rating is going to fall steadily until it reaches that 25% number, and probably plateau there for a while.

19. Right-wingers harrassed Bill Clinton from his very first days, with
screaming references to the fact he protested the VietNam war, dragging out his letter to a Senator in which he had expressed opposition to the war while a student, they went after his wife from the very first moment they laid eyes on her photographs, apparently, claiming she conducted affairs with the man who killed himself, blamed them both for actually murdering him, attacked their national health care plans from the first, Watergate, Travelgate, Jennifer Flowers, a parade of women, attacked even his staff members, family members, Hillary's brother, attacked Chelsea, attacked their "Hollywood" friends, and they're STILL BITCHING about Clinton to this minute.

How he ever kept what serves as his sanity is beyond me. He STILL did so much better than BOTH Bushes, and Reagan, all of whom had the press eating out of their hands, bending over backwards to please them, whereas we got little gems like running photos of Clinton as he DARED to be seen by a photographer lurking outside his window, SMOKING A CIGAR, and PLAYING A BONGO! What SCANDAL! Let's all run around like apes, gibbering about his nerve. Imagine, SMOKING that danged CIGAR, and PLAYING that GOLDARNED DRUM. Doesn't that beat all? Sinner! Infidel! Good for lots of newsclips.

Don't forget how hounded Jimmy Carter was by the press, either: same guys who threw themselves at the feet of Ronald Reagan, and the Bushes.

20. Clinton and Carter shared a common problem, IMO...
Edited on Sat May-13-06 02:38 AM by onager
Carter came into office after 8 years of Nixon/Ford. Clinton came in after 12 years of Reagan/Bush-The-Elder.

That means they both took over a bureaucracy heavily encrusted with Republican barnacles. Both left a lot of these faceless functionaries in their jobs, where they could do steady damage to the new Administrations. For one thing, leak to the RNC and press.

Here's one of the worst examples from the Clinton years. Among the low-level White House staffers when Clinton took over was a woman known for spreading gossip and leaks about her former boss, Bush. According to Bush's own loyalists, she had spread stories about Bush's affair with The Other Jennifer. She was also known to be lusting for a tell-all book deal. Along with all those charming personality features, she was known for a huge sense of over-entitlement and a permanent chip on her shoulder.

That was Linda Tripp.

One of the lamest and stupidest things I ever read was a Clinton staffer's excuse for why they left the Tripp sitting in the White House: "She was a big help. We didn't even know where the light switches were."

Well, duh. It's easy enough to figure out where the light switches are.

Advice to the incoming Dem president, hopefully in 2008: clean house. Purge all GOP loyalists, especially those in a position to snoop on the doings in the White House. That applies to everyone, right down to the cooks and waiters.

If they can't be retired early or fired, then at least move them to some place where they can't do any damage. Maybe a nice posting in the Department Of Agriculture or Fish & Wildlife.

28. Felt sorry for Clinton and what he had to put up with
Even when the economy was doing great under Clinton the GOP was hard at work. Every day a story would appear someplace about Monica, then end with what a sour economy we had to endure under Clinton. The GOPers just got used to a great economy and took it for granted that Bush would carry on the tradition. Those that have finally seen the light are those who got hit heavily in the pocketbook. Loss of job, home, etc. Too bad it took then five years to see that Bush is scum.

24. A Gratifying Poll
After twelve years plus of filth heaped on former president Clinton's head, a failed right-wing power grab disguised as impeachment, electoral fraud in 2000, and an almost unceasing torrent of right-wing propaganda, finding that Gee Dubya is seen as being less honest than former president Clinton is highly gratifying.

"Restoring honor and decency to the White House"--HAH!

27. The photos with the article
are perfect examples of how the corporate media is never-endingly at work programming peoples minds negatively toward Democrats/Clinton and positively toward *, not that it's anything new or unknown to the people at DU. It just shows they aren't about to stop their deliberate propaganda and bias even when they feel they have to report something negative about their anointed one.

Look at the warm colors and "humble but serious and thoughtful" pose for * and the down-turned mouth and dark-shadowed, heavily-lined face of Clinton.

They just never quit.

29. When Clinton was in office
during his second term when all the Monica problems started I remember running into various GOPers in my neighborhood(county I live in is practically all GOP), and knowing I am Democrat they would start conversations about Clinton and Monica and usually end by spewing about how much they hated him. If I asked why they hated him so much, they had no definite answer They simply hated him, the sneer which went along with the hatred said volumes. Now those very people won't say a bad word about Bush, but at least they don't have Clinton as a whipping boy anymore.

41. Think how many photos they could use
to make * look bad. The supply must be endless.

I've witnessed that hatred toward Clinton --it was irrational.

That's what good "Madison Avenue" type marketing and pr can do so well because the ideas it's implanting hook right into the gut. Once the propaganda is implanted in people who don't have strong analytical skills or the ability to think independently it's almost impossible to change. Visual art, in particular, is extremely powerful.

Edited on Sat May-13-06 11:24 AM by tblue37
but are they reasonable enough to carry that to its logical conclusion and vote for a Democrat next time or for a Democratic Congress?

I doubt it. I think they are perfectly capable of doing what some RW radio guy did, when he said he now regrets voting for Bush and recognizes how awful the Republicans are, but that a Gore presidency would be "unthinkable" and that the Democrats are just as bad.

BTW, the article says,
When asked which man was more honest as president, poll respondents were more evenly divided, with the numbers -- 46 percent Clinton to 41 percent Bush -- falling within the poll's margin of error. The same was true for a question on handling national security: 46 percent said Clinton performed better; 42 percent picked Bush.

but the poll now reads:
Which man would you say was more honest as president?

President Bush 26% (19611 votes)

President Clinton 74% (54439 votes)
Total: 74050 votes

Seems they should update the text of the article.
