Published: May 5, 2006RIVERHEAD, N.Y., May 4 — After receiving more than 100 letters urging leniency, a state judge on Thursday sentenced Peter McGowan, the disgraced former Islip town supervisor, to three months in the county jail for taking kickbacks and pilfering his campaign account.
The jail sentence was one-quarter of the minimum recommended by prosecutors, who asked Acting Justice Michael F. Mullen of State Supreme Court to send Mr. McGowan to prison for one to three years.
The justice, who called the letter-writing campaign by Mr. McGowan's supporters the largest he had ever seen "on behalf of a defendant," also sentenced him to five years of probation and ordered him to perform 420 hours of community service.
In March, Mr. McGowan, once one of the most powerful Republicans on Long Island, pleaded guilty to charges of accepting thousands of dollars in kickbacks and of stealing contributions from his campaign fund to pay for restaurant meals, vacations and visits to spas.
