A Democratic research group today formally accused the New Hampshire Republican Party of illegally concealing half of an excessive contribution it received from a pro-gambling Indian tribe in 2002.
The state GOP party’s treasurer, however, denied the charge lodged in a Federal Election Commission complaint by the Senate Majority Project, which was founded by former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle.
The Washington-based group alleges the state GOP used an illegal $10,000 contribution from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians to help fund its illegal phone-jamming operation to try to keep Democratic-leaning voters from the polls on Election Day, 2002.
Senate Majority Project executive director Michael Gehrke charges in the complaint that the Republican State Committee “not only arranged and condoned illegal activity in trying to stop New Hampshire citizens from voting in 2002 but did so with the assistance of illegal money.” The group notes that the contribution limit in 2002 was $5,000.
