Harkin wants troops out by Dec. 31
He is bringing a resolution to the Senate to get U.S. soldiers out of Iraq.

Washington, D.C. — Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa called Wednesday for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by Dec. 31.

Harkin was expected to offer a resolution on the Senate floor saying that the United States should not maintain a permanent military presence or bases in Iraq and should not attempt to control the flow of Iraqi oil.

The resolution also says that U.S. armed forces should be redeployed from Iraq as soon as practical after the completion of Iraq's constitution-making process or Dec. 31, whichever comes first.

Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., is attempting to attach similar language to an emergency spending bill.

"The capable and courageous men and women of our armed forces have completed the tasks they were sent to Iraq to accomplish," said Harkin, who voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq prior to the beginning of military action. "Today, the question is: Why are U.S. forces still in Iraq?"

1. Thanks, Tom for starting the ball rolling...
maybe there will be enough level heads in Washington by now that a solution can be arrived at and we can get our people the H*** out of there.

2. That's my Senator. :-)
Too bad he felt the need to pull Rep. Leach in -- since it is only one more example of Leach breaking the GOP lines when he knows he must in order to continue to hold his seat. It is interesting, however, how the DMR didn't even mention it.

Just in case anyone has forgotten, Harkin was also the first Senator to sign on to the Feingold proposal. Both are good men and both will need our support in 2008.

3. I agree! Harkin may be a little rough around the edges,
but he's a good one.

I'm surprised Leach would commit himself, in this case. I wrote him a couple months ago with a request that he vote on a certain bill that was coming up, but I also asked that he get this administration out of the White House. I guess I had it worded pretty strongly, as he answered that he could see it would be a lost cause to try to change my mind. Smart man.

6. Way to go, Tom Harkin!
We need more Democrats to join Murtha, Kerry, Feingold's call for US troop withdrawal by year's end.

Meanwhile, from the prowar Democrats.... (chirp, chirp, chirp).
