Stabenow donor an issue for GOP (Abramoff)
Stabenow donor an issue for GOP

May 1, 2006

The ethics scandal involving disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his lavish courting of mostly Republican members of Congress had a new twist last week in a churn of GOP news releases targeting a Michigan Democrat.

The spark was reports that Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, facing re-election this fall, had amended her Federal Election Commission filing to show that $4,000 initially reported as contributions from Chris Petras was actually from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe. Petras was a lobbyist for the tribe, as was Abramoff.

~snip~
"What a coincidence that the only FEC computer 'glitch' suffered by Sen. Stabenow just so happened to involve Chris Petras -- a close associate of convicted felon Jack Abramoff," the National Republican Senatorial Committee release said.

1. maybe she can do a Rummy: clitches happen

Stabenow's camp blamed a computer glitch.

The tribe's donations were closely followed by Stabenow's effort to get federal cash for a school for the casino-rich tribe through a budget aimed at helping impoverished Indian schools.

"What a coincidence that the only FEC computer 'glitch' suffered by Sen. Stabenow just so happened to involve Chris Petras -- a close associate of convicted felon Jack Abramoff," the National Republican Senatorial Committee release said.

Angela Benander, Stabenow's press secretary, said Stabenow had said all along that she had advocated for the tribe's school.

3. So the tribe supported a candidate who favors education?
How horrible. SImply horrible, that a politician would try to help poor kids get a decent education.

2. So on closer examination, the ca$h was NOT from the Abramoff associate?
And the GOP is trying to make hay on it anyway? Slime.

It's always been common that the Indians give more to Dems, because Dems are more sympathetic to their cause. That's not corrupt. What's corrupt is the way Abramoff started strongarming them for contributions, and ripping them off, with GOP help.

4. It appears as though
all the political bigwigs were associated with the Saginaw Chippewa tribe at one time or another, particularly Abramoffs buddies.
