Bush orders probe into gas prices
President Bush is ordering an investigation into whether the price of gasoline has been illegally manipulated, his spokesman said Monday.

During the last few days, Bush asked his Energy and Justice departments to open inquiries into possible cheating in the gasoline markets, said White House press secretary Scott McClellan. Bush planned to announce the action Tuesday during a speech in Washington.

Bush is under pressure to do something about gas prices that have reached nearly $3 a gallon. In a new CNN poll, 69 percent of respondents said gasoline price increases had caused them personal hardship. Other polls suggest that voters favor Democrats over Republicans on the issue, and President Bush gets low marks for handling gas prices.

39. This is a great chance to hammer the secret Chaney oIl heads meetings....
that took place back in 2001. Now is a great time to bring them up again. Remind that they were secret. Remind that when they took place oil was $25 per bbl and gas was $1.25 per gallon.

Ask The AWOL/moron how those secret meetings worked out? Ask if they accomplished their objectives? Ask what their objective was?

40. Good luck
The Supreme Court ruled on that a while back.

It would take an act of Congress (HA!) to get the ruling overturned, and, my friend, that's just never going to happen.

26. Bush orders probe into gas prices
Bush orders probe into gas prices

April 25, 2006

BY NEDRA PICKLER ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON-- President Bush, under pressure to do something about gasoline prices that are expected to stay high through the summer, has ordered an investigation into possible cheating in the markets.

During the last few days, Bush asked his Energy and Justice departments to open inquiries into whether the price of gasoline has been illegally manipulated, said White House press secretary Scott McClellan. Bush planned to announce the action Tuesday during a speech in Washington.

It's unclear what impact, if any, Bush's investigation would have on prices that are near $3 a gallon. Asked if Bush had any reason to suspect market manipulation, McClellan responded, "Well, gas prices are high right now, and that's why you want to make sure there's not."

...."I think you'll hear the president say very clearly that he will not tolerate price gouging," McClellan said.

31. Ring-a ding. Ring -a-ding. "Hello?"
"Hi, it's Dick."
"Yes, sir! What can we do for you?"
"Just a heads up. The boy is going to call for price gouging investigations."
"Should we worry?
"Hell, no. It's all for show. This too will blow over. Just pass the word to appear before Congress and look sorry. Remember, just talk about market forces, not forcing the market. otherwise, it's business as usual."
"Thanks, I'll let everyone know. Say, sir? There are some grouse and ducks ready - a great place in Alabama, super private."
"Really?"
"Yeah, and they have four legged critters, too. How about a safari for a bison? We can name it Teddy Kennedy for you. They are built on the same lines."
"Haw, haw, haw, haw, the same size as Teddy. That's a good one!"
"Shall I set it up, sir?"
"Yeah. But first I need some dirt on this Josh Bolten. He's getting too close. You got any good stuff on him?"
"I'll check it out sir. Same payment schedule?"
"No, you'll do this for free. Just check your retirement bonus. You DO want to keep that, don't you?"
"Of course, sir."

41. When will people
tire of this same same same charade. Every time a flash point, especially in an election year is hit with gas prices, even the pols suddenly chime in about "gouging" "alternative energy" blah blah and then do a "study" and vow penalties. The only variation of course is when there will be no penalties, all the potential scapegoats are GOP donors and they expect the issue just to blow over because they can and will do absolutely nothing about it. This is no different than the Dubai clamor, the eavesdropping scandal, etc. This Congress can do nothing about what they must(according to the prescribed playbook of political hypocrisy) preach about for a while and they have not the imagination to vary even a single word from the tired routine of dealing with the "restive public".

The shock the surprise, the outrage are every bit as convincing as Bush's sudden conversion to solar and corn. The first line of media arguments "explaining" and defending and minimizing price hikes caved as they always do. Suddenly it is gouging and Arab bashing and putting taxes on gas.

Wait a minute. Specter came up with perhaps the only visible step they possibly could imagine or voice. Why not tax the consumer for the gas and this logically will help because.... The price of listening to this political gas is drastically more outrageous than the crude being bumped up for Bush's glorious conquests.

People should tell the gassy media and the oily lawmakers to stuff it. They've heard it before and seen the results and the constant repetition. It is well beyond the insult to intelligence phase and into the realm of the repeated punishments of some dreary hell full of lies and pain.

42. He needs an investigation? Isn't he the one who decided to invade Iraq?
Gas prices have something to do with the situation over there, am I right? I don't really need to see further government dollars wasted on a study to tell me that.

I'll bet the investigator will be someone from Exon/Mobil, BP or Halliburton.
