The battle for the Republican nomination to succeed U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay is taking shape, with one candidate making her bid official and another prospect bowing out.
Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs announced Thursday that she will seek the nomination, and Harris County Judge Robert Eckels told the Houston Chronicle this week that he won't.
DeLay, R-Sugar Land, the former House majority leader, announced less than a month after he won the March 7 GOP primary for a 12th term representing the suburban Houston district that he would resign from Congress.
Under state election law, the replacement Republican nominee for the November ballot will be selected by a four-member committee of precinct chairs representing each of the counties that are part of the 22nd Congressional District — Brazoria, Galveston, Fort Bend and Harris.
