'Chicago Tribune' Demands Cheney Answer Questions on CIA Leak

NEW YORK The conservative Chicago Tribune editorial board apparently is fed up with Bush administration's explanations of its involvement in the ever-expanding CIA leak case. In an editorial on Tuesday it declared that Vice President Dick Cheney had "been in his bunker long enough. It's time for him to answer some questions--and not in the friendly venue of Fox News."

Instead, he should appear at "an unscripted news conference" where he would take all questions from reporters.

After detailing the latest revelations about "Scooter" Libby claiming that he had authority from Cheney and President Bush to leak a highly misleading portion of an intelligent documents to reporters in 2003, and denials from the White House, the Tribune observed, "So someone is lying. It could be that Libby acted on his own in leaking the information. It could be that Cheney told him to do so without the president's approval. Or it could be that Bush was behind the leak. Those are questions that the Cheney ought to step forward and answer, along with questions about the unmasking of Plame....

"Bush was well within his authority to declassify the report. But for anyone in the administration to misrepresent its conclusions, particularly if the motive was to punish a critic, is an abuse of the public trust on a subject of the gravest urgency--the decision to go to war.

They still worship the neo-cons...they are just upset that their idiotic programs have worked so poorly. In some ways, the Tribune is worse than the neo-cons, because after having their policies implemented which have turned out to be disasters, they still think 'they could have been done correctly and succeeded'.

Idiots.

16. Actually the Trib is
mostly an excellent newspaper and they rely less on AP than many others. It's op/ed area that's gone 'round the bend and down the shithole the last few years.

18. It's a piece of crap
I'm so deeply disappointed in it, after moving to Illinois from Iowa. I finally gave up, canceled my Trib subscription and read the Des Mones Register online.

In this as in so many areas, Chicagoans don't know how bad they have it.

3. All these demands for * to tell the truth and then...
nothing from the shitheals in the WH. Go effin figure.

The Bush Administration played the media like the harlem globe trotters and the media let them.

Now they are going to make demands? That is some funny shit. Kinda like a hostage finally gettin some balls.

Funny thing is they don't know they are a hostage.

I just find this whole thing LAUGHABLE.

5. Dear Tribune editors,
You had your chance in 2000 and 2004 to show you were a RW publication with a conscience and tell the truth about the Bushies. You twisted yourselves into pretzels finding ways to endorse them.
So now you try to put some distance between yourselves and this sinking ship you're partly responsible for by first going for the people surrounding Bush, buying time in the hope this criminal admin can right itself so you can in the end claim you were right about Bush but he surrounded himself with some poor advisors?
Nice try but you're fresh out of credibility.

9. I will be the one to add the note of thanks.
Dear Trib,
While you will deservedly receive much criticism for your past positions and inexcusably late engagment into the "question authority" role of the press, please also accept a small measure of thanks for taking even this small step.

Many of us have suffered painfully over the past years trying to convince others- including the press- that things were going horribly wrong, only to see as a response publication of even more administration press and dissemination of right wing talking point fantasies.

Welcome to the fight.

10. I'm also listening to SLC mayor
all blasting the * misadmin immigration plans. The tide is turning against them and every little turn of the screw in the correct direction is great.

Apologies will never happen. I've been waiting for the Greens to apologize for 1932 days. We just have to forge alliances with those we can and move on.
