BAGHDAD is to get its first water park and wave machine - thanks to a Scottish company.

Murphy's Waves are in talks with the developers of the indoor water park and recreation centre planned for the Iraqi capital.

And a team from Iraq are due to fly to Glasgow next week for talks to finalist the plans.

Engineers for Murphy's hope to start work on the project before the end of the year.

International sales manager Jim Stuart said yesterday: "I am delighted to be involved in this project and it shows that rebuilding in Iraq really is happening.

In Iran, at least, pools (and sports venues) are always segregated by sex and Iranian women can indeed wear "regular" swimming apparel or workout clothes. If there are no separate facilities, they set aside a certain block of time or certain days just for women.

Currently, even in the best neighbourhoods of Baghdad there is only twelve hours of electricity per day, and this only intermittently.
Most areas of the city have between six and eight hours of power per 24 hours.

I mean, don't we build amusements and frivolities while millions of our citizens live in abject poverty, suffer for no logical reason, and even die from problems and issues that are well within our budget and capacity to solve?
