Sky News: Prodi Claims Italy Victory
Centre-left challenger Romano Prodi has promised to represent all Italians after claiming victory in Italy's general election.

He was speaking after reports that his coalition had now taken both houses of the Italian parliament - although his opponent Silvio Berlusconi is disputing the results.

Mr Prodi said he had earned the right to become prime minister after the bitterly-fought election.

He said he would govern on behalf of all Italians, including those who had not voted for him.

And he insisted that his government would not be weakened by the narrow nature of his apparent victory.

Mr Berlusconi is disputing the result and calling for the recount of 500,000 ballots.

3. 'real' results are due in a few hours
The final votes to be counted are overseas votes, which elect 6 senate seats. The projection of Prodi winning the Senate is based on him winning 4 of those.

There are also 7 "life senators", of whom 5 are generally left-leaning, it's said. So unless Berlusconi can get a recount (and if it was that close, I can see why he'd want one), Prodi should be able to gorm a government.

2. hooray
I cheered in the car this morning when I heard this on NPR.

I hope Berlesconi can't buy his way to a winning recount!

4. CNN reporter: "Thank goodness they don't have hanging chads"
she went on to say Italy is having problems with the vote count but thank goodness none of those nasty chads like we had to deal with in 2000. :argh:
