Scores more suffered serious burns after becoming trapped inside the smoke-filled tents which were hosting the Brand India exhibition Meerut, 50 miles north of Delhi.
The blaze broke out at 5.30pm (1200 GMT) when there were an estimated 2,000 shoppers attending the last day of the event. By the time it had been brought under control all that remained of the three giant tents were their blackened steel frames.
Witnesses described a scene of horror with rescuers pulling charred corpses from among the stalls. "Dead bodies are strewn around, most of them are charred beyond recognition," said Prakash Arya, a witness on his mobile phone at the scene.
Plumes of black smoke billowed into the air as rescue workers ferried casualties to Meerut district hospital. The bodies of men, women and children were loaded into trucks to be driven to the mortuary.
