NAACP Calls For Investigation Into Allegations Surrounding Duke Lacrosse
NAACP Calls For Investigation Into Allegations Surrounding Duke Lacrosse Team

...

NAACP members said this should serve as a wake-up call regarding responsibility and respect. In regard to the rape allegations, NAACP officials are pleading with the public to let the police do their job.

"How we handle this will determine what kind of community we are," said the Rev. William Barber. "As this process unfolds, it should be done in a transparent manner so the whole community will feel confident that justice is being served without regard to racial, economic or social status."

Duke President Richard Brodhead has officially canceled the season and all lacrosse activities. He also accepted the resignation of lacrosse coach Mike Pressler and he will form five campus committees to scrutinize the culture of the lacrosse team and the campus climate on sexism and racism.

1. It's about time
The victim is really being blamed in this case, when it's obvious this was not consensual.

2. Phone transcripts, are they available?
I haven't really followed the case, but I saw an interview with 2 of the lawyers. One of them implied that it was a "set up". Someone called 911 earlier, from a cell phone in the same neighborhood. He said the person said they were walking and than they changed their story to driving by, when people came outside and yelled racial slurs.

After reading the 9 page document yesterday, I am inclined to believe they made the call shortly after the broom comment. They probably didn't want to admit they were dancing, so they would be taken seriously.

Does anyone know if the men requested black dancers?

Between the code names and lying about the sport they played, gives me the impression it was premeditated.

11. here is some info
Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 07:21 AM by melm00se
from the local paper:

time line of events
http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/424229.html

recordings of the 2 911 calls (right side in the side bar)
http://www.newsobserver.com/680/story/424128.html

the common comments heard around here are:

the 2 calls seem too coincidental timing wise and
the content of call one seems to be too close of a match to the complaint.

but some folks here, for some unknown and, to me, unfathomable reason are cluctching at straws.

My personal concern about this is:
with all this coverage what will happen if the DNA tests come back and exonerate the Duke team. Yes, they are a bunch of party-hearty schmucky athletes, but if the DNA evidence does not support the charges, 40 some odd kids have been tarred with a mighty big brush for having a stripper over.

I will wait until the DNA tests are in and indictments handed down before passing judgement.

5. I'm not sure what your point is?
Should the cops rush to trial? Or should they make their case and be sure of the accusations and indictments handed down? With the entire team standing together and not helping the investigation, the uncovering of facts may take a little time.

Alleged Rape Victim Had Past Brush With Law (Big friggin deal. WHAT does that have to do with her getting raped NOW? Excuse ME?)

http://www.wral.com/news/8513890/detail.html

_ _ _ _ _ AND _ _ _ _ _

The lacrosse players' attorney, appropriately named "Cheshire", claims that tempers flared, but no rape occurred. He blames the women leaving
early because they were being shouted at with racial slurs for the incident.

There is NO justification to place ANY of the blame with her.

15. Fascinating, this story gets just a few threads

at DU and Cynthia McKinney and her cell phone was burning up the keyboards.

Interesting, seems it depends on the victim.

16. More things change, the more they stay the same
I agree, I find the lack of responses fascinating. This case makes you wonder. What if it was NCCU's basketball team and the stripper was white? Heaven forbid, if she was white and a Duke student!
