Clarification: 3/30 Secret Prisons Story

By BRADLEY S. KLAPPER
Associated Press Writer

April 5, 2006, 11:36 AM EDT

NOTE: In a story March 30, The Associated Press quoted Manfred Nowak, the United Nations' special investigator on torture, as saying he wanted access to alleged secret U.S. prisons in Europe, adding that he was "100 percent sure" they existed.

Nowak said Wednesday that he was misunderstood and that his certainty applied only to the existence of the detention centers somewhere in the world, not specifically in Europe. "Since they are secret, I don't know where they are. ... Whether this is in Europe or in North Africa or in, I don't know where, in Afghanistan, that of course I don't know

The clarified story is below:

GENEVA (AP) -- The United Nations' special investigator on torture said Thursday he was certain that there are secret U.S. prisons operating in the world, and he wants access to them. "I am 100 percent sure. I have evidence," Manfred Nowak said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Secret Prisons in Poland and Romania?
The US-based NGO Human Rights Watch said that, based on flight records and other evidence, it believed Poland and Romania had cooperated with the CIA to set up secret prisons.

Flight records and other evidence points to Poland and Romania as countries that allowed their territory to be used by the the United States' Central Intelligence Agency to hold top al Qaeda suspects captives, a Human Rights Watch director said.

Tom Malinowski, the Washington director of the human rights group, said the evidence, though circumstantial, strongly pointed to Poland and Romania as being among the unidentified eastern European countries referred to in a Washington Post report Wednesday on secret CIA-run prisons.

Malinowski said sources in Afghanistan told the human rights organization that top al Qaeda suspects, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were moved out of Afghanistan in September 2003

5. Seems like Poland should know better than to allow that to
happen on their own land. Before they had an excuse, they were conquered by Germany, they had no choice. The right wing government did this to Poland. The left wing has lost power. It would have never happened if the left had any say.
