John Culberson had his head so far up DeLay's ass that he couldn't see his feet. Now we don't have to worry so much about DeLay and can concentrate on getting Culberson gone too!!!

278. The short-sightedness of some is amazing, no?
It was looking like Lampson would have actually won in November, as the polls were very bad for Delay. This makes it that much tougher for a Dem to win in that district- which is rather conservative and more than a little republican leaning.

Yep, without Delay's taint, Sugarland will likely elect a repub who is actually just as bad as Delay. Some "victory." :eyes:

284. How does this work
What are the laws in TX. He won the primary for his party then decided that he was going to lose in November so he withdrew from the race. Do the repugs get to put up another candidate to take his place? Will the repug have to run as a write in with no party affiliation? If DeLay died I can see the repugs getting to run somebody else on the ticket in his place, but he quiet because he did not feel like he was going to win and that is different. He should not have run if he did not feel he was going to win, but he did run, so he shoulders the responsibility for the party.

I personally would like to see them give up the seat because DeLay dropped out. Let the Dem basically run uncontested in the district.

285. Yep, the area repub officials get to nominate
The voters don't get a do-over, the local party officials get to nominate instead. And they'll be on the ballot as the repub candidate, not as a write-in.

Not a victory at all.

288. Thanks
I have been out researching this one a bit. I found an article that states he is going to buy a house in VA probably in May. This will make him ineligible to run and the repugs will get to put up somebody else. I am guessing the wait till May is to give them time to find somebody and secondly less time that the other parties in the race can go after his replacement.

306. AAR said
Delay was changing his legal residence so that he would not be on the ballot in November.

He is also leaving his office in June. I think this may be to give his replacement the advantage of being the incumbent in November. I am assuming the Republican Governor replaces the Congressman with another Republican.

I just wonder what happened that made him decide not to run and to resign after he had won the primary.

If the new guy/lady were a neo-con... no... then we're just as screwed.

However, if the new person were a MODERATE... that would be almost as good as if Mr. Lampson were elected.

who is reportedly singing like a canary.

(Meanwhile, Moscatiello, who was indicted as one of the hit men for the murder of Miami cruise ship line owner Gus Boulis, has turned out to have been an FBI informant for YEARS! Amazing. As for who was the beneficiary of the murder of Boulis... my opinion is, the beneficiaries of it were Abramoff and Adam Kidan.)

This will eliminate a BIG help for bushco's crimes - bushco just got delivered TWICE the workload for committing their crimes than they have so far.

This will make it MUCH tougher for KKKarl and the rest of the criminals to do their dirty work.

Might just be the wrench in the works that screws up their plans for big time cheating in the next elections!

or at least one of them (there's no shortage to choose from...)? The mid-terms are about 7 months away and we actually seem to have some damn momentum for a change. If the Dems could get it together and drill the themes of Republican greed, corruption, incompetence, and cronyism into voters' heads, there might be cause for celebration on 11/7.

It would have been much better for republicans he didn't win the primary or better yet if never tried to run ...this just says so much..It also says to me if he is stepping down he must be in really really really big doo doo. Because this boy just doesn't think his shit stinks.

Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), a primary architect of the House Republican majority who became one of the most powerful and feared leaders in Washington, told House allies Monday night he will step down from the House rather than face a reelection fight that appears increasingly unwinnable.

The decision came just three days after his former deputy chief of staff, Tony C. Rudy, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption charges, telling federal prosecutors of a criminal enterprise being run out of DeLay's leadership offices. Rudy's plea agreement did not implicate DeLay in any illegal activities, but by placing the influence-buying efforts of disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff directly in DeLay's operation, the former aide may have made an already difficult reelection bid all but out of reach.

Exclusive Interview: DeLay Tells TIME Why He's Quitting Congress

Posted Monday, Apr. 03, 2006

Rep. Tom DeLay, whose iron hold on the House Republicans melted as a lobbying corruption scandal engulfed the Capitol, told TIME that he will not seek reelection and will leave Congress within months. Taking defiant swipes at "the left" and the press, he said he feels "liberated" and vowed to pursue an aggressive speaking and organizing campaign aimed at promoting foster care, Republican candidates and a closer connection between religion and government.

"I'm going to announce tomorrow that I'm not running for reelection and that I'm going to leave Congress," DeLay, who turns 59 on Saturday, said during a 90-minute interview on Monday. "I'm very much at peace with it." He notified President Bush in the afternoon. DeLay and his wife, Christine, said they had been prepared to fight, but that he decided last Wednesday, after months of prayer and contemplation, to spare his suburban Houston district the mudfest to come. "This had become a referendum on me," he said. "So it's better for me to step aside and let it be a referendum on ideas, Republican values and what's important for this district."

So does Nick Lampson automatically win. Will the Republicans be able to field a candidate that can beat Lampson. Does anyont think this will make Lampson and the Texas Democrats complacent and cause them to lose because they decide not to campaign strongly.

I am happy Delay is gone. I contend this will lead the the downfall of the Congressional Republicans. Delay was the guy forcing things to happen in Congress for the Republicans. Now the Democrats will be able to get some punches in.

figured it was worth a good laugh, and it was! A sampling:

--"Senator Delay?"
--"Republicans always throw their own to the wolves.....One thing you can say about the Dems is they fight for their people no matter what."
--"How about Tom as the new White House Press Secretary? That would drive David Gregory to a drug he hasn't tried before."

And THIS is classic:

From AFP/Pool/File: "Embattled Republican baron Tom DeLay, pictured last year, handily won a Republican primary election in his Texas district, in his first faceoff with the electorate since he was indicted on money laundering and campaign finance violations(AFP/Pool/File)"

Yet this freeper dumbass comes back with:

--"So this is just further proof that GOP voters will not accept this kind of behavior in it's candidates, but democrats do."

The disconnect is truly stunning.

And oh-so-predictably, they couldn't let this go without a Ted Kennedy slam:

--"Fat bloated Kennedy committs involuntary manslaughter and remains in the Senate. Unfrickingbelievable."

Clinton's penis probably made it in there too, but my head started to hurt trying to navigate that shitty site!

Idiot America. LOL

190. And it all started with this young lady
Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 11:29 PM by MADem
Emily "Get out of the way!" Miller:

A BRIEF HISTORY:

In just six months on the job, Miller, 33, who controls access to Powell, seems to have made more enemies than usual among the reporters who cover the State Department. "Her manner is brusque, abrasive, demeaning," said one, asking to remain anonymous so as not to be frozen out of interviews with Powell. "She's not doing the secretary a service; she's doing him a disservice."

Miller responded: "This is much ado about nothing and overshadows the successful meetings on Mideast peace that the secretary was having. My job was to keep the trains moving so that five interviews could get done."

About six weeks ago, Boucher investigated reporters' complaints about Miller's conduct during a pool-camera shoot. "There were one or two places where she was too aggressive," he acknowledged. "We all make mistakes sometimes."

In 2001 Miller was working as press secretary to then-Majority Whip Tom DeLay when she lashed into Post Magazine writer Peter Perl while he was doing a profile of her boss, screaming: "You lied! . . . You betrayed him! You twisted his words! . . . We don't know you. You don't exist. . . . You are dead to us." A DeLay spokesman told us yesterday, "Tom thinks Emily did a fine job for him."

And the juicy bits, ready for a made-for-TV movie:

The two had met on Capitol Hill, where they worked as press secretaries to Rep. Tom DeLay, the feared Texas Republican. They got engaged in September 2001 on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif., and planned an August 2002 wedding. As the date approached, Mr. Scanlon bought a $4.7 million oceanside mansion and guest house, formerly part of the DuPont estate, in Rehoboth Beach, Del. He furnished it down to the monogrammed towels and presented it to his bride-to-be.

Then, with the wedding a few months away, he called off the engagement and started dating a 24-year-old waitress.

Mr. Scanlon and Ms. Miller, now both 35 years old, were among a tight-knit group of aides who helped Mr. DeLay rise to the pinnacle of Capitol Hill in the 1990s and cement his power as House majority leader. Some of those aides provided a link between their boss and Jack Abramoff, a Republican lobbyist.

The end of the engagement was part of that group's unraveling -- which has had significant consequences for official Washington. The aides have since turned on one another, feeding the ethics scandal surrounding Mr. Abramoff that now roils the capital. Mr. Abramoff has admitted he directed Native American clients to pay huge sums to Mr. Scanlon's public-relations firm. Mr. Scanlon secretly gave Mr. Abramoff half of his profits....(MORE at LINK, the whole thing is WORTH READING)

304. Miller thought that she and Scanlon would be the Repub Bill and Hillary
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 01:01 PM by rocknation
a dynamic, co-equal power couple who enjoyed the respect and/or admiration from their political peers and the public alike. It must have been especially comforting to Miller that Scanlon didn't want a "traditional" wife. So what happened? He threw her over for a manicurist--A MANICURIST! I'm certain that if Scanlon had picked someone along the lines of an Ann Coulter or a Michelle Malkin, Miller would have licked her wounds quietly for the "good" of the GOP "team." But by taking up with the equivalent of someone so blatantly "useless," Scanlon dealt a blow to Miller's ego as well as her heart. Talk about marrying down! She blew the whistle out of revenge, not jealousy--she annihilated his future just as he'd annihilated hers. But there's a bright side--Scanlon paid with only his POLITICAL life.

Miller could have taken the path of schoolmistress Jean Harris, whose lover-turned-finance-turned-lover Herman "The Scarsdale Diet Doctor" Tarnower also maintained an affair with his receptionist. Things came to a head when Tarnower told Harris he was taking the receptionist to a prestigious testimonial dinner--and to "stop bothering" him. She drove five hours to Tarnower's home to find him alone, but with the receptionist's nightgown in his bathroom. Harris then proceeded to shoot him to death. In a letter she'd mailed to Tarnower earlier that day, she wrote that losing him would have been "difficult enough even if a decent woman had taken my place."

Why did DeLay drop out now? Also, this is still an open seat. Even though DeLay is gone, he can still be used as an issue. Case in point, Francine Busby is still using Duke Cunningham as an issue in the California-50, even though he's going to prison.

Chris Matthews was just on The Situation with Tucker Carlson saying that the reason that DeLay decided not to seek re-election was that his numbers were trending down and he knows the importance of trends in politics. Yada-yada-yada ....this I assumed... more important ....

DeLay decided not to seek re-election because his seat will be important to the repulicans seeking the majority ...
IF THE ELECTION WERE HELD TODAY THE REPUBLICANS WOULD LOOSE THE MAJORITY !!!!
Even in the House? Is this possible??? Does anyone have info on recent congressional polling numbers?

Former House majority leader DeLay to retire, officials say

ASSOCIATED PRESS

7:58 p.m. April 3, 2006

WASHINGTON – Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texan touched by a lobbying scandal that ensnared some of his former top aides and cost the Republican his leadership post, won't seek re-election to Congress, officials said Monday.

They said DeLay also is likely to resign his seat and leave Congress by the end of May.

DeLay was expected to disclose his plans Tuesday, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the congressman had not made that announcement.

319. In addition to being guilty as sin, he's quitting because of this:
He needs to divert money from his campaign war chest to pay for his legal team.

From The Washington Post:

<snip>

"DeLay has assembled a substantial legal team to fight back, and he has a defense fund -- financed largely by corporations with business before Congress -- that contained more than $600,000 at the end of last year, based on the cumulative record of its receipts and contributions. But contributions to the fund dropped from $318,000 to $181,500 between the third and fourth quarters of 2005.

DeLay also is entitled under federal election rules to convert any or all of the remaining funds from his reelection campaign to his legal expenses, whether or not he resigns, is indicted or loses the election. Election lawyers say one advantage of bowing out of the election now is that the campaign cash can be converted to pay legal bills immediately, instead of being drained in the course of a bid to stay in office.

As of Feb. 15, when his campaign filed its most recent report with the Federal Election Commission, DeLay had $1,295,350 on hand. But that was two weeks before the Texas primary in which DeLay bested three Republican rivals to win renomination, and the pot of money available to him now may be considerably less.

By stepping aside so early in an election year, a lawmaker "wouldn't be spending to be reelected" and could transfer the funds immediately to fend off any federal charges, said lawyer Kenneth A. Gross, a former head of the FEC's enforcement division. The last lawmaker to gain the FEC's formal approval for such a transfer was Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.), who resigned last November after pleading guilty to evading taxes and accepting bribes."

Push the message that it's not just one Republican who's now 'stepped down' - it's a whole nest of vipers, filled with stinking sleaze, and they are being forced out, one by one, running away in a desperate attempt to stay one step ahead of the law. To get rid of them at the election, the average person should be thinking 'corruption' after they hear the word 'Republican'.

“I can continue to be a leader of the conservative cause,” he said. “I can do more to grow the Republican majority, rather than spend the next eight months locked down in running a campaign.”

The congressman, who informed party leaders of his decision late Monday, said his departure from office would depend on the congressional schedule, but he said he expected it would be in late May or mid-June.

And no, Tom, your departure from office won't depend on the congressional schedule...it will depend on the visiting schedule at the Federal Pen!!

214. Think about this....
When DeLay was censured, he got the rules changed so that he could hold power.

When he was indicted, he clung to chances of regaining his position until it became painfully obvious that he would never be boss man again.

Despite an ongoing criminal case against him, he ran in the primary and won.

His aide rolls over.
The general election polls say the Hammer gets replaced.
DeLay is giving up his campaign and probably resigning his seat.

What would make a man who clung to power like he was some Southern Baptist Pope give up?

Option 1. The obvious answer -- The Abramoff investigation is going to puke up a torrent of filth on Tommy Boy that will lead to CSPAN's first perp-walk as a SWAT team drags him the House floor straight to a plane bound for Gitmo.

Option 2. The less obvious answer -- If Tommy can't win, he doesn't want to play. Under arcane Texas law, this is the only way he can avoid being on the ballot in November and having his ass handed to him by the gerrymandered machine he created. It's finally sinking in that he can't get his way on everything, so rather than be a man about it, take his lumps, and lose gracefully, he'll just tip over the board, scatter the pieces, and stomp off to Virginia to pout about how the evil liberals are picking on him.

Note that these options are not mutually exclusive. It is possible that he is both a criminal and a whiny little brat. In fact that's where my money is.

are going to get their asses handed to them by the Abramoff scandal.. they are all trying to hold their fudge until the elections, another reason we get stories like McKinney, to soften a blow to the right like this one.

Watch for the Delay story (news dump on a MONDAY?) to dribble away while the Cynthia story keeps getting hammered, especially by those on this board who for some reason can't understand that this COP needs to be FIRED for his actions.

If I was her I would have said, "Maybe I should have shot him, mistaken him for a quail, THEN I'd get an apology.."

Lay it out there babe, CHENEY CAN SHOOT A MAN IN THE FACE, then Obstruct Justice, but not a Black woman, one of 14 WHOLE blacks in a body of hundreds.

This IS a happy day, I;ve waited so long for this POS to be banished, we are watching History, think about it, they've rigged the system, they own it all, they've used gerry mandering in Texas and he STILL can't win, maybe they DON'T have ALL the machines rigged and we CAN WIN this election in 2006!

EIther that, or their black souls are so paranoid, no matter how many of the marbles they own they still worry about ball bearings :)

240. From the Houston Chronicle:
DeLay expected to 'step aside'

By JULIE MASON and MICHAEL HEDGES
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, a legendary Republican warrior in the political trenches, is dropping his re-election campaign and will leave Congress early under the shadow of the congressional lobbying scandal.

The shocking move creates a weird scramble for his seat in the burgeoning suburbs south of Houston. The state Republican Executive Committee or the party chairmen in the counties in the 22nd Congressional District will get to nominate a candidate for the November general election, officials said. But first may come a special election to select someone to fill the remainder of DeLay's term through the end of the year.

"This was a political and personal decision he has made," said Richard Cullen, DeLay's attorney in Washington, D.C., who spoke to the congressman on Monday. "He just felt it was the best thing for him, for his family, and for the Republican Party.".....

Cullen denied that DeLay's decision was based on the recent plea bargain by former top aide Tony Rudy, who pleaded guilty to a corruption charge Friday and agreed to cooperate with a federal investigation into lobbying practices in Congress.

242. DeLay calls it quits
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas, the House of Representatives' fallen majority leader, is calling it quits in face of mounting legal problems and a tough re-election campaign that may have been unwinnable.

Twelve years after helping Republicans capture control of the House, DeLay, nicknamed "The Hammer" for his hardball political tactics, is ending his bid for a 12th term and will leave Congress as early as next month, party aides said.

257. Think he's hoping for a contract from FoxNews?
Or perhaps a lucrative career on K Street?

DeLay said he hopes to "engage in the important cultural and political battles of our day from outside the arena of the House of Representatives."

Okay, so he has to move out of Texas to allow the state party to select a replacement candidate. He could move anywhere, and he chooses his Virginia condo as his new permanent residence, nice and close to the corridors of power and major TV studios.

Perhaps he can combine lobbying with FauxSnooze appearances, where he'll be a favored guest and billed constantly as "Former Congressman Tom DeLay" while he shills for his employers and the powers that be.

I was cheering last night, we all can, but this bugman ain't exterminated yet.

Just heard it on NPR when I woke up - only they announced it that he was RESIGNING!

Is that correct?

With all his overwhelming primary victory by over 62% and his "momentum" - I bet he's resigning (or refusing to run for re-election) because the charges are more serious than announced - I bet he's either killed someone outright or had someone killed on his orders.

That's my take on it - I would put nothing past this scumbag - as I would not put such things past ANY of this current crop of repukes in power now!

There's one thing, though. Tom DeLay was presiding over a criminal network which he neither created nor destroyed. It's still there, and sooner rather than later a new criminal will emerge to take the reigns of that network.

We must be watching, we must focus on exposing and foiling that criminal network, and this time, we can't take fifteen years to do it.

(I'm not "that lady" but I am also in his district). The GOP apparently already has an "heir-apparent" that they are touting - a current local mayor. He didn't run in the general election, so it sounds like he's the designated successor.

Nick's been great, though - pointing out that he's been running on the issues, his record of service, etc. - good publicity, I think.

I am just hoping that the "candidate of choice" from the pugs has the stench of DeLay to the extent that he will fail to draw support. The good news is that in a special election, we could have a free-for-all that would favor Nick, so HE would be the incumbent come fall.

I just wonder - does this have anything to do with the SCOTUS decision on redistricting that is pending? That could add a VERY interesting twist....

294. Thanks for the report Texaroo!
It may very well have to do with SCOTUS... I've read earlier today that it was DeLay's lawyers who read the handwriting on the wall and forced him to resign... so it could very well be that an unfavorable (to DeLay) decision is coming.

Texaroo, do you have the latest poll reading from Houston Chronicle or a smaller, local paper there in Fort Bend County-area?

By the way, in early 2001, I was in your area... I stayed with a family about a block away from Destiny's Child's home. NICE HOUSES THERE!!! Da'g!!! Here in Seattle, homes like that never sell for less than $2 or 3 million!

Democrats Criticize Bush For Saying DeLay's Innocent

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, December 16, 2005; Page A04

Democratic leaders sternly criticized President Bush yesterday for saying former House majority leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) is innocent of felonious campaign finance abuses, suggesting his comments virtually amounted to jury tampering before DeLay stands trial.

"The president of the United States said a jury does not need to assemble, that Tom DeLay is innocent," said Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.). "To have someone of his stature, the president of the United States, prejudge a case is something I've never seen before."

During an interview Wednesday on the Fox News Channel, Bush was asked whether he believes DeLay is innocent of the charges of money laundering and conspiracy that led to his indictment in Texas and resignation from the House Republican leadership in September. "Yes, I do," the president replied.

That response pushed the White House on the defensive yesterday. Administration officials have repeatedly deflected questions about other legal probes -- especially Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald's inquiry into the leaking of CIA operative Valerie Plame's name -- by saying they could not comment on ongoing investigations. White House spokesman Scott McClellan called the apparent inconsistency a "presidential prerogative."

"The president was asked a question and he responded to that question in the interview yesterday, and made very clear what his views were," McClellan said. "We don't typically tend to get into discussing legal matters of that nature, but in this instance, the president chose to respond to it. Our policy regarding the Fitzgerald investigation and ongoing legal proceeding is well-known and it remains unchanged."

"Call it a presidential prerogative," he added.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) fired back that Bush's comments on the DeLay investigation should free him to reveal who leaked Plame's name. Conservative columnist Robert D. Novak, who published Plame's identity in July 2003, suggested this week that Bush knows who in the White House leaked it.

Democrats yesterday charged that Republican leaders on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue are going to extraordinary lengths to protect DeLay. Once the House adjourns for the year, it will not reconvene until the end of January, the latest reassembly since 1933, said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Pelosi contends that the timing is designed to protect DeLay from a challenge to his hope of reclaiming his leadership post.

Jessica Boulanger, a spokeswoman for acting Majority Leader Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), said the proposed Jan. 31 return date is only a few days later than those of recent congresses. It is "absolutely false" to say the date was picked with DeLay in mind, she said.

Boulanger said House members are in session unusually late this year, and need time at home. She also said the Senate will devote most of its time to a Supreme Court nomination in January, and thus the House would have little interaction with the other chamber.

Pity the poor, lonely, Majority Leader

House Majority Leader John Boehner says he expects this week will be "the toughest week I have had since I was elected majority leader."

"I don't think I ever took two Advil in the morning before I came to work, but I did today," Boehner told reporters this morning before answering a barrage of questions about Tom DeLay's resignation. "And I was looking in my closet for a tie and I thought, I need somthing to cheer me up, so I decided I was going to cheer myself up with a bright tie."...

Ney will stay

Tom DeLay's departure from Congress fueled calls today for the resignation of Ohio's Bob Ney, whose involvement with lobbyist Jack Abramoff is also being scrutinized by federal law enforcement authorities.

"For more than a decade, Bob Ney has loyally served Tom DeLay's corrupt Republican leadership," said Chilllicothe Mayor Joe Sulzer, who is among four Democrats running in the May primary for the chance to take on Ney. "Now he should take another cue from Tom DeLay and retire for the good of Ohio"...
