Even little old ladies pack AK-47s in Iraq

...
BAGHDAD With chipped, painted fingernails, Nahrawan al-Janabi picked up a cartridge and slid it into the chamber.

"Like this," she said, loading her new Glock pistol with a loud, satisfying click. "You see, like this."

Akram Abdulzahra now keeps his revolver handy at his job in an Internet café.

Haidar Hussein, a Baghdad bookseller, just bought a fully automatic assault rifle and has been teaching his wife how to shoot.

Iraq has long been awash with guns. But after the bombing of a Shiite shrine in Samarra in late February, sectarian tensions exploded, and more Iraqis than ever have been buying, carrying and stockpiling weapons, adding an unnerving level of firepower to Baghdad's streets.

10. What? No Pics?
Rats. Have a headline with that, and no pics.

Then to read the article, and there is no mention of old ladies after that. Just about everyone mentioned in the article is under 30. Did I miss the part where they mentioned old ladies owning AK's?

Speaking of the AK-47, they call it "the worlds most popular killing machine". Um, according to who? When did they do a survey on this?

I know people will disagree with me, but I'd think in a situation like Bagdhad, I'd at least have a handgun or a shotgun, and make sure everyone living with me and my family knew how to operate firearms and how to defend themselves. To do otherwise in this environment would be inviting torture or death.

Thank you,

L.
(Great, my first post in DU and I'm already going to be branded as a cuckoo for thinking private citizens should own guns. fatdave and kare will be sooo proud of me. *rolls eyes*)

12. Thank you!
I was just talking to another DU'er offline after I posted this. Seems like a lot of people are rethinking the 2nd Amendment over the past 6 years! LOL :-) Sorry to play off yet another cliche' about Democrats/the left/whatever.

13. if you are ARMED in Iraq that makes you an INSURGENT-U.S. mercenaries and
any other American can kill anyone armed -- it counts in the "insurgents killed" category.
We simply have to protect ourselves while we pump our oil.

it's really just a matter of time

14. Nah, you're cool.
And I don't think you'd get too much of an argument from me (FWIW) that if I were trying to maintain a household in Iraq, I'd want a decent assault rifle for protection as well.

23. "the worlds most popular killing machine" is based on NUMBERS.
Since introduced in 1949, it's estimated that more than 90 million have been produced-
far more than any other single firearm.

I'd guess that the world's most popular killing machine would be the Honda Civic or something...

Eh. Just semantics I guess...

18. single fire or full-auto?
another quote

"The U.S. military has added to the arsenal also, by shipping in hundreds of thousands of firearms and millions of rounds of ammunition, in an effort to equip the fledging Iraqi security forces so U.S. troops will be able to leave."

tells me that this situation is gonna get a whole lot murkier--"Let's spend billions arming a country that's already awash in guns and ammo, not to mention the fact that this country wants the U.S. gone, like yesterday!"

still, a couple of bills for an AK and a single bill for a frag grenade--you can't beat that with a bat!

21. I thought the same thing myself...
You know that they're probably really the Chinese 56 or some Romanian knock-off, but still $200 ain't bad at all.

Considering that type of Urban environment, I'd still want a shotgun. That's just me though.

I'm still sensing a huge anti-gun bias wafting throught that article that bugs me.

Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 02:39 PM by benEzra
and require the equivalent of a Secret-level government security clearance in order to own.

Here in the USA, you can also buy non-automatic civilian guns that look a lot like real AK's (I own one, paid $379 in 2003), but they aren't capable of automatic fire...unlike the ones in Iraq...
