Schiavo's Parents Vow to Keep Up Fight
WASHINGTON (AP) - One day before the first anniversary of Terri Schiavo's death, her family came to the nation's capital with a pledge to keep fighting "the growing culture of euthanasia."

Schiavo's mother, Mary Schindler, said the foundation formed several years ago to keep her brain-damaged daughter alive would now focus on educating the public about end-of-life decisions.

"We lost in our battle to save Terri, but we believe it is incumbent on us to redirect our efforts to saving the lives of the innocent, who every day are being targeted by the euthanasia cult," Mary Schindler said at a news conference outside the Capitol.

Unlike last year, when Congress, President Bush and Florida Gov. Jeb Bush pressed to keep Schiavo alive, only one lawmaker was on hand Thursday with the Schindlers, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan. The conservative lawmaker is considering a bid for president in 2008.

6. What's really sad about this whole mess is that Terri was supposed
to have been a very private person. She didn't like being the center of attention. Surely her parents knew that! I know, when this whole thing was going on, I told my son, if you EVER do anything like that to me, I swear I'll haunt you till the day you DIE! How can these parents defame their daughter's memory like this?

30. Olbermann's interview w/Michael S. was very revealing about Schindlers
From the interview transcript:

SCHIAVO: I think the Schindlers got caught up in the right to life movement. I believe they have sold their souls to these people. I do believe that her mother understands. I do believe her mother knew that this was Terri‘s wish.

But her mother was kind of controlled. So, as far as the rest of the Schindlers, I mean, if you look at her sister and brother before the media showed up, I think I can count on one hand in the last 10 years that Bobby ever visited Terri.

Suzanne, I don‘t think she ever visited Terri.

I mean, when Bobby walked into the nursing home prior to Woodside, they had to ask him for identification because they didn‘t know who he was. And to stand out there and say the things he said just blew my mind.

OLBERMANN: What changed them in your opinion? What—was there guilt that motivated them at that point? You say that your former in-laws had sold their souls to those—to the activists. Was that—what made this all happen this way inside them do you think?

SCHIAVO: I believe that they have been fed so much information through the Randall Terry‘s of the world, through the coalitions, the right to life coalitions, they were just inundate with this stuff and fed them power and gave them power to do what they were doing.

Like I said, with their father, I don‘t want to get into any back stabbing or anything like that, but a little greed with him. I believe her that mother, like I said, who really knew that this was Terri‘s wish. If you can watch Terri‘s mother throughout that whole proceeding, especially at the end when she made her speeches, you can tell that she was told what to say.

Terri's brother, Bobby Schindler, said the foundation will work to eliminate the "persistent vegetative state" diagnosis and to have feeding tubes for severely injured patients considered ordinary, not extraordinary, care.

And replace it with what? Hasn't this been decided by the medical community?

I've beens saying for a long time (even before the freak show last year), that I felt Terri's mom was sincere, and I got a decent vibe off of her... then, she seemed to morph into something totally different, and started saying nutty stuff. The siblings, especially, creeped me out. And the dad? Forget it...

41. The really weird thing about all this is that most people are scared
to death of being "hooked up to a machine"! From what I hear, that happens all to often because the people don't discuss this ahead of time with family members and don't put their wishes down in writing in a proper legally binding document. Check your state laws and take care of this right now. Sometimes being hooked up to a machine is a bridge that gives the body time to heal. It kept my dad alive as he recovered from a stroke 29 years ago and he's still alive, well and working. Sometimes it allows a family time to gather to say good-bye in the case of an accident. That's happened several times in my extended family. It's cruel to use them to stretch out a natural expected death such as end-stage Alzheimer's , cancer or heart disease.

46. I see people kept alive....
because of guilt and selfishness. Those left behind have unresolved feelings and issues with the person or the other members of the family. I think how you die is a distillation of how you lived. I have witnessed a number of deaths and all have been different. All the family dynamics come in to play.

The beautiful deaths....a man in his tiny hospital bed with his and 2 young daughter cuddeling and talking softly. A young son whispering Cajun French terms of endearment in to his elderly father's ear as he was taking his last breaths.

The heroic deaths...a man with NO audible blood pressure sitting up, talking with his family, waiting for his son to make it to his bedside-and dying only after he spoke to his son. A mother enduring hell on earth to have one more day with her baby and dieing on Easter Sunday, leaving her Pastor and I with a sense of bitter sweet joy.

The ugly deaths... having 2 sons fist fight while their dieing father is in tears, begging them to stop. But I have to say, Terry's was one of the ugliest I have heard of.

I haven't seen them all but from what I have seen, I tend to side with Michael. I base this on the fact that he was always by her side and never waivered from his statements. She received great care, even in the most difficult of circumstances. He honoured his commitment to Terry through out. I hope he can go on with his live, but as Terry's parent's seem to be unable to, I hope he can have some measure of peace.

50. I wanted to say that, but I didn't have the first hand knowledge.
Thank you.

St Francis' Canticle of the Sun refers to Sister Death. None of us likes to say good-bye to a loved one, but that is different from knowing when it is time to let go. My family lost a beloved uncle a few years back. He was in his eighties but in good health. He died after tripping on the stairs and hitting his head. He was in the hospital for about two weeks and it looked at first as if he might recover, but then it was clear that he wasn't going to make it back and he made it known that it was his time and the family honored his wishes. Could we have kept him alive a few more weeks? Maybe. Probably. Would it have been right? No.

45. Are they volunteering at nursing homes?
Nursing homes need a lot of help. They can stay at the bedside of someone with end stage Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, or perhaps a terminal brain tumor and help feed, bath and clean incontinence. Across the country these people are LIVING, and are NOT being "euthanized" Nurses, nursing assistants and other staff do their very best despite budget cuts and understaffing to care for people like these. Some have tube feedings, and they will die with tube feedings, with their lungs filling until they can no longer breathe because the body just isn't going to work any more. This scenario is much more common than "pulling the plug" Jesus.
I worked in a nursing home for 11 years. And most families, even the ones who kept their loved ones "full codes" necessitating multiple trips to the hospital, picking up resistant infections, knew when it was time to let go. I have sat at many a deathbed surrounded by grieving family members, who managed to give their loved one a little dignity at the end.

If these people really want to make a difference, I suggest they spent part of each week at a nursing home, rehab center, burn center, Cancer center. They can read to dying children. They can show patience to a senile elderly person who says the same thing over and over. They can learn how to show empathy and love to those who have lost, or are losing a family member

What they are doing now is the height of hypocrisy. Because whatever their honest personal beliefs, they have spend enough time with their daughter where she died to have seen what happens to others, to see the need of others. Other families have different choices. Evidently they think they are more qualified to make these choices for others.

"Cult of Euthanasia" Bullshit.

49. My Mom and her Living Will
I was her Health Proxy and had POA. Months before she went into the hospital, she not only made out her Living Will, but planned and paid for all her funeral arrangements.

She told me, "I do not want to be kept alive as a vegetable, as some kind of science experiment to see how long my body can be kept alive. When my mind goes, I am no longer here. Let me go. If you do not follow my wishes, when I do die, I will come back and haunt you for the rest of your life."

Can that be any clearer? The government AND the Schindler's need to let people die in peace, according to how the individuals so choose.
