Houston Police Take Protesting Students Into Custody
This is the first I heard about custody. I've heard about disciplinary actions, but not custody.

HOUSTON -- More students in the Houston area protested Tuesday for the second day in a row as the U.S. Senate considers proposed changes to the country's immigration laws.

. . .

Houston police said they have taken some students into custody and that several others were cited for daytime curfew violations.

1. Daytime curfew?
I hope it was the yellow coded curfew.

Everyday we get farther and farther away from what we used to be - a decent society where the rule of law and people's rights were respected.

14. What does yellow coded mean?
I've never heard that before. Does it have to do with the colors of the terra alerts?

26. It's a reference to V for Vendetta
They have forced curfews and I noticed one of them was a yellow coded curfew.

The movie gets   from me. Definitely see it.

30. (OT) I second that emotion.
It was a powerful graphic novel, and I winced a bit to see someone trying a movie adaptation. But I was very pleasantly surprised, and it exceeded my expectations.

Let's hear it for a decent Moore adaptation! :)

3. There are too many students and too few police, if
students stay united, they can bring the whole city of Houston to a friggin standstill. Go students!

5. Here's hoping! Stranger things have happened. These HS
students walking out have a definite revolutionary potential.

I'm in Los Angeles. Yesterday, acc. to the L.A.U.S.D., 22,000 HS students walked out all over the city. (That's probably a conservative estimate, as I've heard numbers as high as 40,000.) They totally fucked up L.A. traffic downtown during much of the day. More power to them.

This morning at 8 a.m. I heard a group of about 100 from Venice H.S. marching by my apartment in the pouring rain. I grabbed my "Pinche Bush" sign and ran outside as fast as I could to lend my support to them. Many of them saw the sign and were appreciative of it.

WorldCantWait.org did some wonderful organizing work out here in local high schools and I'm not sure whether they've been helping organize it. But the LAPD can't do anything; imagine the television coverage if they start beating in the heads -- one of their preferred tactics when the natives get too uppity -- of unarmed high school students. I'm loving it, watching Chief Bratton eating numerous shit sandwiches and all the L.A.U.S.D. bureaucrats shitting their pants at the the fear that they might lose their state per diems for each student who walks out.

7. Much as I like Cindy, I'd like to think Michael Moore's
acceptance speech at the 2003 Academy Awards was the initial spark. That's not to diminish Cindy's efforts one iota, but Moore was the first readily identifiable public figure to speak out on national television. Or am I also forgetting a possible predecesor to Moore?

public figure...(He should be recognized for this)

Cindy got the peaceful protest and sit in going....

32. Oh, yeah, I think they pre-date Michael Moore by a couple months.
Thanks for the note. In the case of the Dixie Chicks, they actually suffered some adverse consequences for "speaking out," as they were banned from many radio stations. Moore's speaking out probably benefitted him, not to take away from the nobility of his gesture.

9. Sheehan had nothing to do with this
They're demonstrating against immigration reform - and frankly, are going beyond the scheduled demonstrations set by their elders.

I don't think we need underaged drivers maiming more kids. The point was made - further unrest will only generate public animosity to their cause.

12. What do you mean by 'public' -- I support them walking out,
most of my cohort in the anti-war movement supports them walking out and a good portion of the Latino population in L.A. supports them walking out. Oh, I get it, you mean it will generate public animosity among white upper middle-class people to their cause.

You need to read the entire thread before weighing in. We were talking about the revolutionary potential and who was most responsible for creating it, if it exists. One poster said Cindy Sheehan and I responded with Michael Moore. Both of those figures made it possible to speak out against authority when authority is in the wrong.

18. What coalition_unwilling said....
It's the revolution potential...is it the catalyst that will get more Americans to stand up and make this corrupt Government stand down....?

During the Selma, Alabama marches they went back and marched again....they were hosed and the dogs were let loose on them and yet they went back and marched again...This is revolution...this is standing up.....

This country is ready.....

I think you're grasping for straws - nothing indicates that these students are making any statement about the war.

Revolutionary potential? Now you're scaring me - I want progress, not social chaos.

34. Are you serious? In L.A., the big Saturday demonstration
featured thousands of demonstrators carrying "World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime" placards. In addition, thousands of A.N.S.W.E.R. banners were in evidence in Saturday's demonstration (A.N.S.W.E.R. stands for "Act Now to Stop War and End Racism").

The students may not be making any statement about the war, but that wasn't what I was referring to anyway. I was discussing what had made the climate of protest\demonstration\walk out possible. My hypothesis was that it was Michael Moore's speak out at Academy Awards, in response to an earlier poster who credited Cindy Sheehan. Subsequently, another poster noted (correctly, I believe) that the Dixie Chicks spoke out before Michael Moore.

I'm sorry you are scared by "revolution." Did the bloodless revolution that ended apartheid in South Africa scare you? How about Castro's seizure of power from the incredibly corrupt and brutal Batista?

17. There is rage in the Latino Community.
It is appropriate, under the circumstances. Sometimes rage must be expressed, Freda. Frankly, such expression is long overdue, especially from the young and people from "minorities".

Long overdue.

31. I don't blame 'em
My point was that it was wrong to make a connection between their rage and the anti-war movement. Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore didn't mobilize these crowds.

That said, I think they're doing themselves a disservice by not showing more discipline. The original demonstrations were scheduled and peaceful - to take off a Jon Stewart riff, who would *want* to hire these kids?

Just that exercise of civil disobedience. They arrested kids I'm guessing for backtalking the officers. Or they might have been kids with other truancy violations.

24. Let me say:
We American Latinos and when I say American Latinos, I mean the ones that where born here in the U.S.A. are starting to get piss and are willing to stand by our brothers and sisters. I don't agree about coming here illegally but until the our Government starts fining and closing down any company or any one that hires a none legal worker, I will stand by all the Latinos. I also think this is going to be the one issue that is going to bring all American Latinos together. And the rest of our American brother and sister will see that we Latinos come in many colors and we will not be kick around any more. The Rapeblican party will have a very rude a waking this November.
