China says to ban sale of human organs
BEIJING, March 28 (Reuters) - China said on Tuesday it will ban the sale of human organs and strengthen oversight of its transplant market, which critics say has become a haven for illegal trade and centres on organs of executed prisoners.

Ministry of Health regulations that take effect on July 1 require the written consent of donors and restrict the number of hospitals allowed to perform transplant operations.

Cases must also be discussed by an ethics committee, said the regulations posted on the ministry's Web site (www.moh.gov.cn).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) called the new rules, which lack the authority of a full law, a positive step.

"Some brokers worldwide were exploiting loopholes in the legal framework in China," said Luc Noel, of the WHO in Geneva.

"China was known as a place where foreigners can purchase organs, particularly from executed criminals."

1. This is such a sad comment on our society today.
That the most populated country in the world says they will stop selling human organs. That they did it to begin with is dumbfounding. Historians will look back on this period as a time when the world had no morals or conscious.

2. Fifteen years ago a friend of our family went to China as a
tourist. In the middle of the trip he developed acute appendicitis and had to go in for emergency surgery.

Years later, he discovered that they had removed not only his appendix but A KIDNEY as well!! He found out when his family doctor asked him about the scar on his back!

4. That was my reaction when I heard this story too! So much for
the idea that they are snatching organs "from prisoners" only, eh?

6. Bake sale on human organs?
That's how I read it, so you can imagine my consternation.

And it's too soon after breakfast to be reading stuff like that. Even if it was in my own mind.

10. you want organs, cough up more money for kickbacks
now if they do away w. death penalty and stop chopping up bodies for parts, i stand corrected

but i am a suspicious soul and suspect this is just words so high level officials can extract more of their share of the profits

12. selling organs would not be a bad idea.
Edited on Tue Mar-28-06 08:45 PM by JustDoIt
right now, the demand for organs far exceeds supply. if we had a way for people to sell rights to their organs after their death then this would drastically increase the supply and benefit both the poor and the rich who need organs. and for organs like kidney or pieces of liver which you can give up while you are living, this would be even better.
