Iran accuses US role over Iraq prayer hall killing

Iran accused the United States of killing at least 16 people in a raid on a Baghdad Shiite mosque, a charge that the US military vociferously denies, according to an AFP report.

"The Islamic republic of Iran is repulsed by the merciless killing of worshippers in the Mustafa Hussieniyeh (Shiite prayer hall) in Baghdad and considers it a savage terrorist act," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said, quoted by the state news agency IRNA.

The US military has denied involvement in Sunday night's controversial raid on a Shiite mosque that also resulted in the arrest of 18 people.

"Given the existing evidence of the American forces' involvement in this criminal act, we want the international community and human rights organizations to look into the issue," Asefi said.
