Breaking on BBC: Blast at US Base in Mosul
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 04:58 AM by maddezmom
will look for a link. Many feared dead. :(

found link:

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - A bomb exploded inside a joint U.S.-Iraq base in Mosul on Monday and many people were feared dead, Interior Ministry sources said.

The sources said the explosion targeted Iraqi army recruits. One Interior Ministry source said the attack may have been carried out by a suicide bomber strapped with explosives but it was not immediately possible to verify this.

2. I don't pay any attention to the bullshit Iraq War anymore
I'm just spent. This country voted for it, and now they are just little late in deciding that they are tired of the war.

I have MY life, and MY problems and the Iraq War is no longer a part of it.

Well, anyway. I heard Lindsay Lohan may get the part for the new Wonder Woman movie. BAD choice.

47. I remember one day visiting my parents
and bringing up the topic of the Iraq invasion, the first one under dubya senior. My mom said "at this point I could care less. I can't watch it anymore. I can't do anything about it and all that the TV does is bring sadness to the house. We read in the evenings."
My mom was a geriatric progressive liberal fireball but upon this moment she uttered
an idea I had never considered.
'There comes a time when I have to choose who is more important; me or that war of theirs.'

This is getting predictable. I'm beginning to wonder about all "terrorist" attacks since the fall of the Berlin Wall--wondering who was really behind them.

Blast rocks US-Iraq military base
Map, Iraq and Mosul
At least 30 people have been killed by a bomb inside a military base housing US and Iraqi forces near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, police say.

Police said the blast might have been caused by a suicide bomber targeting Iraqi army recruits in Kask village.

Unconfirmed reports say all the victims were Iraqis, although details of the incident are still coming in.

Mosul was the scene of a bombing in 2004 that killed 18 Americans and four Iraqis at a military base.

A suicide bomber wearing an Iraqi military uniform detonated explosives he was carrying in a US armed forces mess tent.

41. I think its natural to care more about people and things we identify with
I love cats but I care more about my cat than other cats.

I have friends and family in Iraq and so attacks that kill Americans hit home in a different way.

That said, we should strive to rise above those impulses or at least to not allow to much disparity.

This may not be the thread for it but I believe very bad things would happen if we packed up and left Iraq suddenly. I remember the slaughter in Vietnam. I opposed the war in Vietnam but i still believe we did not leave properly.

There was no slaughter in Vietnam after we left, in fact, the slaughter came to an end because we left. The longer we delay withdrawing from Iraq, the more likely that Iraq will end with our Ambassador being rescued by helicopter from the Green Zone.

44. The fall of Saigon went much better than doomsayers had predicted
So you have a point. But there were still more deaths in 24 hours than American forces have suffered in two years in Iraq. And there was a tremendous suppression of freedoms thereafter and massive "re-education."

In Iraq I have no confidence that the Kurds would surrender quietly the way the corrupt South Vietnamese government did and I have no confidence that the death toll would not quickly eclipse that of the last two years or that those Iraqis who have helped us would not be the main victims.

I want the troops out of Iraq in an orderly fashion but an immediate withdrawal isn't even in the Washington debate mix... The focus there is on the administration plan to invade Iran. If something doesn't change we will soon have two wars.

That's the problem with this whole steal the oil in the Middle East campaign...

All dems know that it's the repubes that believe the end justifies the means-
that idea was from LEO STRAUS--the neocon's guru/master--how they derived their entire PNAC philosophy-
So don't try and pulin' our cheney !

and if yer grandma wears combat boots and your nephew, your daughter and all the kids on your block are all in Iraq
I sincerely hope they all arrive home safely!
Seriously- the best way to ensure that is to get ALL Troops Home Now--

48. just going off a bit--
it's just that a lot of people think that American lives are worth more-
a life is a life--ours --theirs--who cares--this killing serves no purpose.
--and we have absolutely no business invading a soveriegn nation that posed no threat to us or its neighbors
-by the way I think some of us have forgotten somehow that Iraq had no part in 911--

Military presence in the region is absurd.
It would have been like getting bombed at Pearl Harbor by the Japanese and then attacking Spain.

peace!

17. 40 dead after blast at US-Iraqi base
As many as 40 people were killed today when a suicide bomber blew himself up amid a group of men queueing at an army recruitment centre outside a joint US-Iraqi military base in northwest Iraq. The attack was at the Tamarat base near Tal Afar, a town near the city of Mosul held up in a recent speech by President Bush as a success story for American and Iraqi forces in the drive to quell the insurgency. The US military said there were no American casualties from the blast.

The exact details and death toll were still unclear, but an Interior Ministry official said: "Forty people have died and 20 were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the midst of candidates waiting at a recruitment centre for the Iraqi defence forces." It was one of Iraq's bloodiest attacks since a suicide bombing at a police recruitment centre in Ramadi which left 70 dead four months ago.

Mosul, Iraq's third city, was used as the base of the US Army's 101st Airborne Division during the initial stages of the invasion three years ago. The restive city has since become the scene of a fierce land war between Kurds and Sunni Muslims. It was also the scene of one of the most deadly insurgent attacks against coalition forces. Fourteen US soldiers, four US civilians and four Iraqi soldiers were killed in a suicide bomb attack on the dining hall of the Forward Operating Base within the airfield complex in December 2004. The attacker wore an Iraqi uniform to gain access to the compound.

Meanwhile, details emerged of a joint U.S.-Iraqi Special Operations attack in northeast Baghdad last night that saw the heaviest battle with Shia militiamen in a year.
