Feingold's Censure Resolution May Pay Off

WASHINGTON - While only two Democrats in the Senate have embraced Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio, voting record)'s call for censuring
President Bush, the idea is increasing his standing among many Democratic voters as he ponders a bid for the party's presidential nomination in 2008.


Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, insists his proposal has nothing to do with his political ambitions. But he does challenge Democrats who argue it will help energize Republicans.

"Those Democrats said that within two minutes of my announcing my idea," Feingold said in a telephone interview last week. "I don't see any serious evidence of that."

A Newsweek poll taken March 16-17 found that 50 percent of those surveyed opposed censuring Bush while 42 percent supported it, but among Democrats, 60 percent favored the effort.

The Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing Friday on Feingold's resolution.

Mehlman, visiting Wisconsin last week, skipped the hug and instead criticized Feingold. That reinforced an RNC radio ad buy in the state, in which a narrator says, "Call Russ Feingold and ask him why he's more interested in censuring the president than protecting our freedom."

Feingold's response, essentially, is bring it on.

"I welcome their attempt to make a campaign issue of the question of whether there will be accountability for the president's breaking the law," he said. "They will remind people every minute that the president thumbed his nose at the law."

First time I read it I said "this guy could win in 08"

I mean it shows he has the credentials of the old Democratic party when it was the party of the people, and not so beholding to corporate or urban influences. Pro sportsman and environment, anti free trade, pro privacy and individual liberty.

I don't see how anybody who read the profile on there wouldn't like him, especially a lot of the Democrats that have been abandoning the party for it's not helping the american worker!

So Rasmussen polls that have republicans like Santorum and Burns being defeated in 06, SurveyUSA polls that have Bush with postive net approval ratings in about 5 states, how exactly are they trying to influence public opinion? What about Zogby's polls? He is a democrat, how is he trying to influence public opinion?

I'd really like to know your answers to all those questions. Personally, I don't cherry pick the polls I like and claim the rest of them are propaganda. Are polls often inaccurate? Sure, but if you look at many of them you often can get a consistent pattern. I guess you don't think the dozens of polls that look something like this:



reflect public opinion, but I do.

Because most of them are innaccurate and based on poor methodology designed to influence public opinion. Any grad student worth their salt can (and many will) tell you that- and they'll tell you why.

Sure, you can sometimes find useful trends, but even that depends on the extent to which the data can be reliably standardized over time- and whether the question asked actually results in a valid measure.

Good polling data (just like good research) is EXPENSIVE. That's why campaigns spend so much money on internals. And why things like GSS data are so totally at odds with what Gallup puts out there and expects people to jump to the tune of. And, people in America do love to jump to the tune and get on bandwagons. 70% believe in angels you say? Really? It must be true then- so maybe I should too.

As to Zogby. LOL. You won't find ANY credible statistician that doesn't have serious problems with his whacky methodology.

is going to look a lot more attractive after a 7th straight congressional election loss this fall.

Absent divine intervention, the DINO's have virtually assured that party will remain in the minority- and for all practical purposes, irrelevant on the national level for at least the next 2 years, so things may well be looking up for Russ in 2008.
