Transgender Social Rights Activist Files For Roy Blunt's Seat In Congress
Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 07:22 PM by deadparrot
On Monday March 28th Midge Potts of Springfield traveled to Jefferson City to file for Missouri's 7th District U.S. Representative in the August 8th Republican primary. Ms. Potts, whose legal name remains Mitchell, also filed the appropriate forms with the Missouri Secretary of State's office to have have he/r name listed as Midge on the official ballot. S/he has been living fulltime as a woman for more than two years. "Anybody could represent Southwest Missouri better than Roy Blunt," said Ms. Potts, "he has blatantly betrayed his constituents by pledging allegiance to his corporate contributors while ignoring the common people whom he was elected to represent."

Congressman Roy Blunt, who was recently ousted as House Majority Leader, has been alleged to play a big role in recent Congressional corruption scandals that have been plaguing American politics.

"Our Representative government is no longer 'of the people, by the people, and for the people' as envisioned by Americas founding fathers," says Ms.Potts. "We need to start moving toward a direct democracy that truly reflects the will of the people." She intends to run on a platform of traditional Republican values which include small federal government, balanced budgets, reducing the deficit, states rights and individual freedom.

Potts hopes to create dialogue and debate on issues that would otherwise be ignored by career politicians such as Roy Blunt. "The people of Southwest Missouri deserve more than empty rhetoric and broken promises", s/he stated, "I will offer ideas to move America forward, and I will listen to the ideas of common people so that we can start solving the problems confronting America as a community."

Midge Potts, then known as
Mitchell, served in the Navy
and the Persian Gulf War. She
was discharged in 1993.

Although Potts considers herself an independent, she says she is running as a Republican because she believes in the party's traditional platform of financial conservatism, states' rights and a strong national defense. She is pushing for term limits, debt reduction and building up the National Guard.

She also wants an end to U.S. involvement in Iraq. Potts was arrested twice last year at war protests, one on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court and the other in front of the White House with anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan.

3. Here is a few comments from a veteran friend of hers.
"A lot of people are going to write Midge off as being some weirdo. Big mistake," said Hembree, 77, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. "I found Midge to be a really hard worker and smart. Really on top of issues and was willing to do just about anything that needed to be done.

"We need to get more people who are smart, who are up on the issues, that are serious - and Midge is serious about this. This is not some kind of stunt," Hembree said.

6. Good for her! Missouri politics is about to get interesting again
However I hope that Midge takes some precautions. Living anything else but the white fundie christian lifestyle, much less transgender Republican is going to bring out the worst in many, many people in that area. This is after all Springfield Mo, where an African American young man was more than likely lynched for daring to date a white girl only a few years ago.

So I hope that she takes care, but go for it Midge!

9. wow
Talk about fodder for late night comedians. And s/he is a running as a Republican. Wow. Unfortunate that s/he will never make it through the primaries. News of the weird, the Daily Show, Leno, they're all going to have a field day with this. If by some freak act of chance or providence s/he makes it to the general election Missouri politics will officially become interesting. I'll cheer he/r on if only for the novelty.

10. Damn...I am sorry I don't live in this district anymore
Of course, as overwelmingly rabidly hateful as Springpatch, Missouri and the rest of the 7th is, Midge Potts will be lucky if she isn't lynched by Springpatch's "God-Loving Christians" on the public square just like 3 African Americans were 100 years ago. Of course, then the mob had to break into the jail with a telephone pole and drag the untried parties to the square. Still, there are a lot of taverns downtown, so they can burn Midge like they did the hanging African Americans.
