Senator's call for censure is misguided, Mehlman says

Ken Mehlman, who was in Green Bay as part of a three-city tour of the state, defended an RNC-sponsored radio ad that criticizes the Wisconsin Democratic senator's call to censure the President for a National Security Agency wiretapping program.

The ad, which began playing in Milwaukee and Madison markets this week, accuses Feingold of leading Democrats in "opposing the PATRIOT Act and terrorist sur-veillance program" and undermining the president's efforts to secure the nation.

Mehlman dismissed a report by the nonpartisan Annenberg Political Fact Check, which says the ad falsely characterizes Feingold's resolution.

In a statement Thursday, Feingold said Mehlman failed to explain why Bush "decided to break the law."
"Of course we should wiretap suspected terrorists, and under current law, we can," he said. "The question is why the president believes he needs to break the law to do so."

They're being run in the media outlets. How curious. But if a Democratic ad criticizing Bugman DeLay or Uncle Tom Blackwell is submitted, the media outlets will go over it with a fine-toothed comb to pick out even the most niggling disputed fact and then not run it, claiming that it could expose them to libel charges. Curious, indeed.

By the way, Democrats, read Mehlman's response to the totally fair and warranted criticism of the ad, then learn from it. These characters don't back down from their lies, even when they're caught with their hand in the cookie jar all the way up to the elbow. When the yammerers and the chickenhawks start squawking about the next Democratic ad, should it actually air, tell them to go choke on it; the GOP is bad for America, and we shouldn't apologize for saying so.
