Rockefeller, Byrd to skip Bush speech

WASHINGTON -- When President Bush stops in Wheeling on Wednesday to deliver a speech on the Iraq War, West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd won't be there.

Byrd, D-W.Va., one of the harshest congressional critics on Bush's handling of the war, does not expect to hear anything new, so he will not attend the noon speech at the Capitol Music Hall, his spokesman Tom Gavin said Tuesday.

"The senator is not going to listen to the president paint a rosy picture on a disastrous situation," Gavin said. "The senator believes, no matter how many speeches the president gives, that the policy on Iraq is broken."

Sen. Jay Rockefeller,D-W.Va., will not attend the speech because he will undergo back surgery Wednesday at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System. Rockefeller, the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, recently has criticized the Bush administration for bypassing Congress to approve monitoring of U.S. citizens' international phone calls and e-mails.

1. No surprise there. It was a surprise that NO ONE met him in Ohio
though, and THEY are PUGS! The excuses they used were very shallow to say the least. Even Blackwell "couldn't attend!

3. That's a great move. Quit dignifying Bush's speeches by attending them.
Everybody should do it.
