20. but yes, very very expensive to live there now.
Used to be fairly reasonable. Now a 1,200 2bd/1ba old house costs over 800k. That's why we left after 17 years.

26. OMG. i knew it was high, but that's really high. a few months
ago i was looking into getting a condo in the san diego area just for the summer and they were running really high too. plus on top of that there were high maintenance fees.

it's getting like that here in phoenix. we bought our first house 16-1/2 years ago -- brand new semi-custom 2400 sq. ft. half acre lot, pool, spa and another $20,000 in upgrades. it cost us $164. my hairdresser just bought a 1960s house, remodeled, small property, 1400 sq. ft. -- $390,000. when we came here you could get a house that size new for $69,000.

in 1996 we bought 2-1/2 acres in the middle of the desert goes all the way up the hillside. we paid $48,000. now i acre is going for $325,000. we built in 2002 before those costs went nuts. so now we have about 2800 sq. ft. they tell me it's worth 1 million. but even if we were to sell, which we have no intention of doing, it would cost us that much or more for another comparable house.

10. I used to know some morgue/medical examiner/coroner types...
...and during a spate of suicides one of them told me, 'you know, it's always tragic when one of these (suicides) happens, but sometimes when they come in and we hear about their lives all we can say is 'thank god he didn't take anybody with him.'

17. I once read that their objective is
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 05:37 PM by NYC
to kill people. When that does not provide the satisfaction(?) or reward(?) or relief(?) they expected or hoped for, they then kill themselves.

Otherwise, it truly makes no sense for a suicide to kill other people first.

I can't remember where I read that. It was years ago.

41. I think this guy was another SERIOUS mental case, like so many of
our homeless in America. Los Angeles' streets are full of them. They are for the most part either drunks/druggies and/or schizophrenic/severe bipolar. With medication and supervision these people have a real shot at a productive life, but in Bush's America they are just useless eaters to be spurned.

49. people with guns kill people.
Sure people use other weapons/poison to kill people, but in the news, guns seem to be doing most of the work.

Gun nuts will use cars as an example of people dying, but cars are not used intentionally, to kill people anywhere near as often as guns are.

I was out on the beach all morning just got back & read this. I'm probably about 3 miles from the Denny's where it happened. I don't have anymore info than the rest of you and I'm not going anywhere near that place. It's a freeway location and not frequented by the locals. Hope it wasn't anybody I know. From the local paper there. I lived in the Pismo area for 17 years, and left 3 years ago. I'm holding my breath until I know if someone I know is involved. I have many friends and family there. I've been feeling odd all day.. before I heard about this.. so I hope I'm wrong.

How awful for the wife and grandaughter of that one victim.. to watch him shot to death like that. Only in America, gun culture from hell.

is most likely not aware of the shootings in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and several others that I can't easily recall. Guns kill people because they make iteasy for people to kill. Simple. Fewer guns in circulation does lead to a decrease in violence in society.

31. ah.. I see the gun people are out in force today.
Please.. outside of a country involved in a civil war, can any of the gun folks give me statistics that show there is any other country with rampant gun violence such as America? Yes.. I'm sure there are random shootings in other countries. But you'd have to be in denial to believe that America, which is ruled by the NRA, is not mired in gun violence. Easy access to guns, yes, that is a factor.

29. OMG! I knew one of the victims...
I just saw the name, and it's a very distinct name, and he lives in that city.. either they have his age wrong or it's his father. The reporting is so murky right now that I can't be sure on the age. He was in his 40s.. they first said a man in his 40s, a man in his 50s, and a man in his 60's were killed. The shooter was 60, one victim was 68 (tho they misstated his age as 65), and the other they list as 73.. my old friend was in his 40s... so it was either him or his father. How awful, awful, awful... and senseless.

It appears that it takes a certian mentality to be a gun owner. Just like it appears it takes one to be a republican. Getting upset and going after people for pointing it out, enunciates it.

Knowing the son, that sounds completely in character for the family. They are just truly good, good, people. What a horrible waste to see an active, kind, vibrant, 73 year old grandfather taken down by gunfire. They are saying that he saved a lot of people by what he did.. or else the shooter would have continued on.

48. Let me guess: The NRA-types will say "Look, gun control doesn't work!"
"This happened in California, which has so many gun control laws on the books already!"

Of course, what the NRA types don't mention (gee, I wonder why?) is that so many of the guns that end up being used in California are obtained from out-of-the-state. Kind of hard to keep guns out of the hands of California's criminals and psychos when all one has to do is mosey on down to New Mexico, slap some dough on a pawn shop dealer's counter, and voila! Instant gun to go blowing people away.

Just like the psycho lady from New Mexico who massacred the California post office last month.
