Summary of Findings

In the aftermath of the Dubai ports deal, President Bush's approval rating has hit a new low and his image for honesty and effectiveness has been damaged. Yet the public uncharacteristically has good things to say about the role that Congress played in this high-profile Washington controversy.

Most Americans (58%) believe Congress acted appropriately in strenuously opposing the deal, while just 24% say lawmakers made too much of the situation. While there is broad support for the way Congress handled the dispute, more Americans think Democratic leaders showed good judgment on the ports issue than say the same about GOP leaders (by 30%-20%).

The new Pew survey underscores the public's alarm over the prospect that an Arab-owned company could have operated U.S. ports. Fully 41% say they paid very close attention to news about the debate, which is unusually high interest for a Washington story and is only slightly lower than the number tracking Iraq war news very closely (43%). There was broad opposition to the proposed deal from across the political spectrum, including two-to-one disapproval among conservative Republicans (56%-27%).

Bush's overall approval measure stands at 33%, the lowest rating of his presidency. Bush's job performance mark is now about the same as the ratings for Democratic and Republican congressional leaders (34% and 32%, respectively), which showed no improvement in spite of public approval of the congressional response to the ports deal.

15. I have an old Gallup Poll publication here in my office

Nixon hit 24% in July and August of 1974.

Carter hit 21% in late July of 1980. Obviously a lot of people voted for him in 1980 holding their noses (he got 41% of the vote).

We still have a ways to go, but everytime I think Bush can't get any lower, and that his down to just the Kool-Aid drinkers, I am surprised yet again, that the Kool-Aid seems to be wearing off for more and more people.

As I was watching the news tonight, I was wondering if these were unprecedented numbers as compared to previous administrations. But, as usual, there was the illogic of those polled. While they don't trust Bush, and would most likely return both Houses to Democrats if the election were held today, they still trust Republicans with the war and homeland security.

This is a golden opportunity for the Democratic Party. November and 2008 are being virtually handed to us on a silver platter.

My faith in this country has been restored just a little by these numbers.

(P.S. Why were Carter's numbers so low? The hostage crisis? Gas prices? Can't remember.)

By publicly criticizing Bush's position on the Dubai Port deal, Members of congress look tough on terrorism. Just watch. Virtually every member of Congress who opposed the Port deal will put that opposition front and center in their reelection campaigns. That way, the GOP Congress members can say, "Look, we are not totally aligned with Bush. In the interest of protecting the Country from potential terrorist threats, we stood firm in opposing the Dubai Port deal until Dubai backed down." That theme will be sufficient to allow the GOP to retain control of congress.

Then, after the election, Karl Rove will do his magic to cause Bush's Poll numbers to once again increase. Sacrifice Bush's numbers on the short term to help the long term goal of retaining control of Congress.

I know it sucks. And I makes me ill. But I believe this is the strategy.

unless the Democrats are unbelievably lame, they can trot out photo after photo, vote after vote of five years of Bush bootlicking/coat-tail riding/hero worshipping Republicans. If all the Repugs can then say is "well, we opposed him on the Dubai thing" (which large majorities of the public also opposed), that could at best only play to their base, and even runs a risk of making them look even stupider than they are.

I know it sucks, but I'm simply repeating what the polls actually show, even though Bush's numbers are in the toilet. And Bush is not running for reelection.

And look how much Congress's numbers have jumped in this latest poll taken after the Dubai port deal fell through! The general public has a short memory, and this incident will be on their minds more than what has happened over the previous four years.

I just wish that the democrats in office had a spine and stood up to Bush forcefully when he began this bullshit. We need more politicians like Conyers and Paul Hackett. It pissed me off when Hackett was forced out.
