Murdered Redcaps had multiple bullet wounds

One of the six royal military policemen murdered by a mob in southern Iraq was shot 18 times, an inquest heard today.

The Redcaps became trapped in a police station by a group of 300 Iraqis in the town of Majar al-Kabir, near Basra, on June 24 2003.

A small group broke away from the mob, which was protesting at homes being searched for weapons, and murdered the trapped Redcaps, riddling their bodies with bullets.

Detailed accounts of the injuries received by four of the Redcaps were heard today on the second day of an inquest into all six deaths at Oxford coroners court.

As forensic experts read out a prolonged description of the wounds, various members of the families left the inquest in tears.
