Thomas makes Interior secretary list
By JOAN BARRON
Star-Tribune capital bureau Wednesday, March 15, 2006

CHEYENNE -- Wyoming's senior U.S. senator is on the list of candidates to replace outgoing Interior Secretary Gale Norton, the Casper Star-Tribune learned Tuesday.

Craig Thomas, who announced earlier he would seek re-election to the U.S. Senate this year, was a candidate for the Cabinet post when Norton won the appointment five years ago.

Thomas, 73, could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening. But a source close to Thomas who spoke on condition of anonymity said the Republican had talked with the White House about the job and was on the "operable list" of candidates to replace Norton.

Thomas’s spokesman, Cameron Hardy, declined Tuesday to answer any specific questions about the possibility of the senator being in the running for the position.

“He’s definitely happy he’s doing the job he was elected to do and (to) continue to serve the people of Wyoming,” Hardy said.

Allard touts Campbell for Interior chief

By Mike Soraghan
Denver Post Staff Writer

Washington - Sen. Wayne Allard wrote to President Bush on Tuesday suggesting his former colleague Ben Nighthorse Campbell to succeed Gale Norton as secretary of the interior.

Allard, R-Colo., said Campbell told him he'd take the job if it is offered.

Much of the speculation over who will replace Norton, who announced her resignation Friday, centers on Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne and Interior Deputy Secretary Lynn Scarlett.

Sims said other possible candidates include U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, and former former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot. He called former Rep. Scott McInnis, R-Colo., "an obvious name to be considered," though McInnis has said he's not interested.

He also threw out two "dark horse" candidates - former Colorado Department of Natural Resources chief Greg Walcher and Dave Freudenthal, Wyoming's Democratic governor.
