Rove says troops will remain in Iraq, despite calls for withdrawal

JOHN SEEWERA
ssociated Press

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - ...

"Tyrants in the Middle East would laugh at our failed resolve," he said. "To retreat before victory would be a reckless act."...

A key issue to this year's midterm elections will be campaigning against Democrats who voted against the Patriot Act, Rove said...

Rove did not mention several contentious issues surrounding the White House, including the political storm that forced the reversal of a deal allowing a Dubai company to take over operations at six U.S. ports.

Rove did defend the administration's anti-terrorism efforts and defended its warrantless eavesdropping program...

Bush adviser Rove thanks Ohio GOP for help in '00, '04

Sunday, March 12, 2006
Michael Sangiacomo
Plain Dealer Reporter

Bowling Green, Ohio- ...

...He cast the Republicans as a party that looks forward to "robust debate" but one that will not stoop to political sniping, which he accused the Democrats of doing.

Rove did get in one zing, though, saying the most popular Democrat in Ohio was Jerry Springer...

Rove said the Republicans defied the oddsmakers by winning in Ohio in the last presidential election...

"The experts said we should look at the Democratic vote in Cuyahoga County and said we can't win," Rove said, referring to the 2004 election. "But I said, 'Look at northwest Ohio and the rest of the state.' And we did win."...

Rove thanks Ohio but is mum on party woes

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060312/NEWS09/603120424/-1/NEWS

BOWLING GREEN - ...

Mr. Rove throughout the quips of his speech stressed that ultimately ideology requires pragmatism and said that the political party in control must always guard against passivity and an "entitlement mentality."

"It's not enough to believe the right thing," he said of the Republican Party platform. "You have to win elections."...

Mr. DeWine toured several cities yesterday with Mr. Rove. They started in Cleveland and ended last night on the Bowling Green campus.

Mr. DeWine said he has not shied away from Mr. Rove or the lame-duck President, whose poll numbers are among the worst of his presidency...

2. Sherrod Brown's succinct summary of the energy situation
Here is the first part of it from the cleveland.com link above. This is an condensed and succinct summary of what has happened:

Too much of our energy needs are met by Middle Eastern oil. Under the current system, we send billions of dollars to countries that sponsor terrorism and hate against the United States and our friends across the globe.

This arrangement isn't practical or safe for our country any more.

We've heard a lot of tough rhetoric from the president lately, but the actions of his administration and the Republicans in Congress tell a much different story.

The energy bill was written by the oil industry. It has done nothing to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, and failed to produce action on alternative energy sources.

Instead, we've wound up with higher energy prices and weakened environmental standards.

Republicans in Washington have fought against better standards. There's been little interest in wind and solar power, not to mention biomass and clean coal technology.

...more!...

14. someone at that TV station's OK,mentions O'Connor speech + more
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 12:51 PM by Algorem
...Rove pointed to recent debates over the nomination of US Supreme Court justices as proof that Americans want jurists who interpret the constitution rather than legislate from the bench. "This battle over the courts will determine whether issues of tremendous public importance are decided by elected representatives or by nine lawyers in robes," he said.

NPR's Nina Totenberg recently aired a story about a speech former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor gave at Georgetown University. The Reagan appointee wouldn't allow her actual words to be broadcast, but Totenberg reports that O'Connor warned the Georgetown audience that judges can make presidents, Congress, and governors "really really mad." She also said that judges who don't make people angry, aren't doing their job. But she said judicial effectiveness is "premised on the notion that we won't be subject to retaliation for our judicial acts.":

Claiming the Republican party has gone from a minority party to one that is "broad and inclusive," Rove called for a more civil tone in political debate, and a softening of the harsh tone of such discussions.

Rove also said he expects the GOP to do well in the November mid-term elections...

I have a lot of friends among local Republicans and although I differ on political philosophy, I generally think they are honest, decent people.

And so I have no idea why in the world local Republicans would want to associate themselves with "Bush's Brain" and key political strategist for the president, Karl Rove.

This guy is responsible for much of the worst politics in the last five years. This guy is the epitome of the philosophy of "whatever it takes to win" attack politics that has so corrupted our political system.

For example, he masterminded television ads linking honorable Democratic senators with Osama Bin Laden in campaign commercials, insinuating that if you have political differences with this administration you are equivalent to a terrorist...

18. Rove Says Troops Will Remain In Iraq
Rove says abandoning Iraq now would signal to US allies that America can't be trusted.

He says he came to Ohio to thank volunteers and local politicians who helped put Bush back in the White House two years ago.

Ohio will be crucial again to Republicans in the 2008 presidential election.

No Republican has won the presidency without carrying the state.

Rove says a key issue in this year's midterm elections will be campaigning against Democrats who voted against the Patriot Act.

I can see the counter-strike.

50. The gall is astounding

"Tyrants in the Middle East would laugh at our failed resolve," he said. "To retreat before victory would be a reckless act."...

Iraq is an illegal war waged by an election-stealing tyrant, they have no understanding or plan for achieving "victory"- their goal is maintaining permanent bases in Iraq. As they've never cared about nation-building or democracy elsewhere, it would seem that, while their first preference might be a puppet govt., their second choice would be sectarian strife so they can rob the country under cover of the violence and chaos.

"A key issue to this year's midterm elections will be campaigning against Democrats who voted against the Patriot Act, Rove said..."

These are the same people on whose watch 9/11 happened, despite years and years of warnings, which increased dramatically in the months before 9/11. The FAA had received 52 separate air threat warnings. 11 different countries warned us. Bush Co. lied about the warnings they'd received. There are still waaaayyyy too many unanswered questions about 9/11.

"Rove did not mention several contentious issues surrounding the White House, including the political storm that forced the reversal of a deal allowing a Dubai company to take over operations at six U.S. ports."

Who trusts them on that when they let 9/11 happen?

"Rove did defend the administration's anti-terrorism efforts and defended its warrantless eavesdropping program..."

War is their anti-terrorism effort. They've done nothing to increase security. Is it cuz they know there isn't a real threat, that attacks only happen when they allow them? The only examples put forth about how the warrantless eavesdropping has helped- Brooklyn bridge being downed by blow torches, copycat attack on Library Tower in LA, etc. are completely bogus- these were plots that had been dropped because they weren't feasible.

Bush adviser Rove thanks Ohio GOP for help in '00, '04

Yeah, they didn't say it in these words, but even the GAO concluded the election could've been stolen electronically, and probably was. The proof of that is that NO mainstream media mentioned the report when it was released last Oct.
http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d05956.pdf

The real power is in the hands of the People, and the people who speak the truth. These tyrants are in a weak position- they don't have legitmacy, but they need the appearance of it, so they have to lie constantly and work to cover up their lies, as the truth keeps coming out and exposing them. They're counting big time on people not noticing or caring, but the info keeps coming out and their poll numbers keep dropping. Given that they've staked their credibility as terror fighters on the absurdity "We're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here", they can't really do another terror attack.

I think people are beginning to tire of the same old message in the face of growing evidence that this administration totally fucks up EVERYTHING.

52. Um, is someone going to tell Pigshit he ISN'T the goddamned president?
I mean, the guy sure acts like he is. So does Dick Cheney. So, at times, does Condosleeza Rice. Everybody acts like they're the damned President. Everyone except Lancelot Fuckface Link, that is. He's too busy strumming guit-fiddles, eating cake with The Maverick and visiting our jobs in India to care about things like drowning cities, the shit-bad, pro-corporations-getting-whatever-the-hell-they-want economy or the fact that he's directly responsible for thousands of dead American soldiers and citizens and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans.
