Doctors slam Guantanamo force feeds
Doctors slam Guantanamo force feeds
Friday Mar 10 05:35 AEDT
More than 260 doctors, including best-selling British author Oliver Sacks and 17 Australians, have called on the US to abandon the force-feeding of Guantanamo Bay hunger strikers.

Medics from seven countries signed a joint letter published in this week's edition of leading medical journal The Lancet.

International agreements prevent doctors from force-feeding of hunger strikers if the individuals have made an informed choice about their protest, the doctors said.

Restraint chairs to hold inmates while feeding tubes are inserted - which are reportedly used at the US military base in Cuba - are also banned, they added.

Doctors at Guantanamo Bay who are carrying out the actions on detainees should be disciplined by their professional bodies, the letter concluded.

More than 260 doctors from around the world have called on the US to stop force-feeding hunger strikers at Guantánamo Bay.

They say international agreements prevent doctors from force-feeding if individuals have made an informed choice about their protest.

The restraint chairs used to hold inmates while feeding tubes are inserted, which are reportedly used at the US military base in Cuba, are also banned, they say.

An estimated 500 people are being held without trial at the base in Cuba...

7. The evidence mounts
I'm all in favor of impeaching Messrs. Bush and Cheney -- and, just for the record, Dr. Rice, Mr. Rumsfeld and Mr. Gonzales as well. It really shouldn't be necessary to impeach and remove them from office; the election of 2000 was stolen and, consequently, none of these people have any legitimate claim to the offices they pretend to hold. Nevertheless, to humor the deluded, it would be desirable to go through the motions.

The charges are war crimes and crimes against humanity. Specifically, I accuse these people and others (including Mr. Feith, Mr. Rove, Mr. Libby, General Powell, Professor Yoo, Dr. Carbone, General Sanchez and General Miller) of either (and in many cases, both):
  • Lying to start a war of aggression against a sovereign state which posed no immediate threat to the United States or any other state nor was in breach of UN resolutions; these acts being in violation of the Charter of the United Nations; and
  • Creating and maintaining a network of facilities for holding and maintaining suspected terrorists where said suspects were subjected to torture or other humiliating or degrading treatment in violation of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions and the Convention against Torture.
It should be noted that the United States is party to all of the said treaties and conventions and, therefore, said treaties and conventions are the law of the land under Article Six of the Constitution of the United States.

Moreover, if the US government is unable or unwilling to prosecute these evil-doers for there heinous acts, then an international tribunal for war crimes in Iraq and crimes against humanity arising out of the so-called war on terror should be convened for that purpose.
