Suspicious bag prompts evacuation at PDX
We got this alert at 12:44pm...

PORTLAND, Ore. - A portion of the Portland International Airport has been evacuated due to a suspicious bag in a TSA screening machine.

According to Steve Johnson, Public Information Officer for the airport, the north ticket lobby, which contains counters for Delta, Hawaiian, America West and Continental, has been evacuated, along with the baggage claim area below it.

Johnson says the airport is otherwise operating as normal, although both the upper and lower roads have been closed.

A special unit has been called in to examine the package.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A suspicious bag at the Portland International Airport is causing a delay for some passengers, who are being shuffled to alternate ticket counters.

The north ticket lobby, which contains counters for Delta, Hawaiian, America West and Continental, had earlier been evacuated after the suspicious bag was discovered. The baggage claim area below had been cleared as well.

A special unit was called in to examine the bag. Its contents are still unknown.

As for passengers, as of around 1 p.m. they were being shuffled to other ticket counters to get checked in, resulting in a short delay.

Flights were taking off as scheduled.

NEW UPDATE 1:36

Update: Additional areas closed at the airport

By KATU.com Web Staff
PORTLAND, Ore. - Additional areas at Portland International Airport have been closed, including part of the food court, following an inspection of a suspicious bag.

Things had been running fairly smoothly at the airport following an earlier evacuation of the north ticket counter area and a baggage claim area below it when the suspicious bag was discovered.

Some passengers were being delayed as they were shuffled to alternate ticket counters, but other than a short delay, were not greatly inconvenienced.

However, just before 1:30 p.m., other areas of the airport were shut down.

There is no word on what was found inside the suspicious bag and why it may have prompted additional closures.

Maybe they really found something?

4. I'm wondering too... I didn't really pay attention to the first couple of
alerts. woooo Suspicious package!

But the last one, where they're closing down more of the Airport has me wondering if they really found something. Maybe they're going to blow it up on tv and we can see somebody's CD player get scattered all over the terminal! yea!

Though I hate airports, that one, and Eugene, Oregon, are my faves.. oh and Santa Barbara. All very pleasant and user-friendly.
