Mid dismissed for sexual misconduct
A Naval Academy crew team member was dismissed from the school Friday for having what his attorney describes as consensual sex with a female midshipman, but the female was not punished for her part in the matter.

The midshipman's attorney, William Ferris, wrote a five-page letter to academy superintendent Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt on Feb. 22, asking Adm. Rempt to avoid treating his client unfairly, according to documents.

The letter mentions "multiple instances of intercourse" that took place sometime before Aug. 8, 2005 in a hotel room and in an automobile.

Both parties allegedly bragged about their exploits, witnesses told Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigators, but only the male was charged with using "obscene, profane, provoking, or improper language."

1. The NCIS, formerly the NIS, are mostly just Sex Police.
When I was in they spent most of their time investigating people suspected of being gay. It's almost funny I know, but it's true.

And without knowing any of the details, the reason why the female mid is still in school is probably because she cooperated first.

3. Yes, NIS was focused on ferreting out gays.
When the Iowa had the explosion, even my dad agreed that NIS would blame it on gays, somehow, some way.

4. In my experience the NIS is a bunch of wanna be Jr Gmen.
They were remarkable for their incompetence! Not much like the intrepid sleuths they show you in the make believe world of TV I can assure you.

12. Senior - subordinate, perhaps?
They are both sophmores, but perhaps the male had a rinky-dink position of authority, and thus the greater responsibility.

From reading the article, though, it sounds as though there was some bias at play in the punishment process. Without knowing the full details it's impossible to determine if there are factors in mitigation.

2. They BOTH should be bounced out. Not fair to discipline only
the guy.

The military MUST learn to stop referring to 'women' as 'females'. 'Females' is not exclusive to humans and suggests something less than human.

5. Further down in the article, the man involved is referred to as a 'male'
I agree it's dehumanizing, but I think that's the point.
It's not directed exclusively at one particular gender.
Military indoctrination is largely about eliminating the "quaint" notion of self.

7. Yes, they did.
But in the US military 'women' are nearly always referred to as 'females'.

It's maddening.

After bootcamp you don't need to de-humanize people. Perhaps that's the 'navy'/sub community experience rubbing off on me. Perhaps the army is different.

8. That's why I refer to women as "gyno-americans", and men
as "cock-man oppressors".

(Sorry, but one of my favorite movies, "P.C.U." was on cable last week)

13. Male and female are the terms--you avoid shorthand that way
Guys and gals, dudes and dudettes, or babes, or dolls...you see where it can go. Nothing wrong with the terms male or female, IMO. Male isn't an exclusively human term, either.

When addressing individuals or groups, usually in speeches and whatnot, the term "the men and women of the Armed Forces" (as an example) IS used, but when referring to policy, or equipment, the male/female terms are applied, generally.

16. gonna get flamed
for once a women doesn't get the short end of the stick. In my head I think they should be treated equally, but in my heart, I am glad that she didn't get in trouble.

For too long women have gotten the short end of the stick in the military. Ya know, dying of dehydration so they don't get raped and all.

17. It's hard not to
celebrate when a woman gets a little break, isn't it? I'm all for equality, but once in a while turning the tables and having the upper hand is a bit of a lark.

Sad thing is, IF she got a break, it won't last long. She'll get retribution like crazy from the other men. It won't be pretty. Probably raped, but most certainly drummed out in one way or another. That may, in fact, be exactly why they didn't go after her. The punishment she's likely to get now is worse than what she would have gotten.
