Himalayan melting risk surveyed
5 March 2006

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4762576.stm

A new weather station is expected to show the extent of warming in the Himalayas, one of the world's biggest deposits of ice and a key source of fresh water.

It has been installed on the longest Himalayan glacier, in the Everest region of Nepal.

There have been numerous reports of glacial retreats in the Himalayas over the years, but this weather station will be able to quantify changes to the local climate.

2. What are they going to do?
Walk across carrying buckets?
Fly in and squat claiming asylum?

What they will do is die.

Their government are no more affected by the plight of
the common man than yours or mine. The leaders of the
land are not going to be concerned for a long time ...
i.e., until *they* (personally) are affected ... at which
point the world gets very hot in some senses.

On the other hand, by the time that this point is reached,
so many millions will have perished that the demand on the
limited resources will have eased so the "leaders" may well
be able to come to some sort of agreement by then.

3. Unfortunately, Nihil,
you've got it down pat. They will die - and our "leaders" will look blindly around and not see what's right in front of their face. It's like the famine in Africa or the deadly fighting - it's not affecting them directly so they're unable to see.
