Dubai firm submits to broader U.S. review
Mar. 03, 2006

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/14002652.htm

WASHINGTON - A United Arab Emirates company formally submitted Friday to a highly unusual, broader examination by the Bush administration of potential security risks over its plans to take over significant operations at major U.S. ports.

The Treasury Department, which governs the review panel, is expected to conduct another preliminary scrutiny that could take up to 30 days and then open its full, 45-day investigation.

DP World previously said during the renewed scrutiny, or until May 1, Dubai executives would not control or influence company's business in the United States, but said it was entitled to all profits during the period.

1. Review?
I laugh out loud at the very idea that ANY real due diligence regarding security will be done, in 45 days, 45 weeks or 45 months. In fact, exactly how do you, with ANY amount of "investigation" or "study" determine if an entity is trustworthy.

Screw this deal, and may every lousy jackass that votes for it lose 50% of their constituencies' votes.

4. You do have to wonder which of two obvious models they will adopt:
The prior program of ensuring security at highly sensitive routinely identified sources of potential risk like ports and chemical plants (in this case the action by bush the terrism-fighter seems to be best-characterized as "No Action")?

-or-

The reviews and investigations leading up to the Iraq invasion (where the action was twist, adapt, or basically ignore the facts and reality that do not comport with our predetermined course of action)?
