San Francisco impeachment vote doesn't resonate afar

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has spoken: President Bush must be impeached. It's a political earthquake that is shaking the establishment across the country.
OK, maybe across San Francisco Bay, to Berkeley.

...

"San Francisco is a fabulous place, but most Americans don't take their political cues from the city by the bay," said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt.

Some members of Congress - who actually have the power to impeach - were unaware of the vote days after it was taken. Others, like Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the liberal Democrat whose district includes much of San Francisco, urged the president's opponents to channel their anger into the 2006 congressional and 2008 presidential campaigns.

...

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., was also unfazed by the supervisors' call. "It would seem to me that there is plenty to occupy them on civic issues," she said.

5. Can't we please get someone to run against her?
I tend to agree with the "moderate" position that one of our highest priorities as activists should be to help guarantee a majority of democrats in the house and in the senate.

But this is only a priority derivatively. It has its basis in the non-derivative duty to advance the interests of all citizens.

The esteemed senator from California too often unintentionally advocates positions contrary to this important duty and so, even if attempting to replace her did appear to conflict with the derivative duty to help guarantee a majority in the senate, we would still be obliged to attempt to replace her.

But the facts are that:
a) we would probably get whoever defeated her in the primary elected
b) Though we would have to devote considerable California resources to get this hypothetical person elected, California resources, both fiscal and human, are underused at a national level. Hence, there would be negligible negative impact on other campaigns. I might worry if this were a Presidential year, but it isn't.

Is there no state senator to turn to? Is there no lawyer? Is there no actor? Is there no charismatic, intelligent moderate or progressive democrat in the entire state willing to risk their future political career for the sake of the nation?

It seems to me there are plenty of domestic issues to occupy DiFi - she should get the fuck out of Washington.
