Cheney Urges Americans to Save
Cheney Urges Americans to Save

Thursday March 2, 2006 3:46 PM

By JEANNINE AVERSA

WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney urged Americans Thursday to do a better job of saving and challenged policymakers to strengthen pensions and fix Social Security to help people in their golden years.

``The American dream begins with saving money and that should begin on the very first day of work,'' Cheney told a conference here exploring how to encourage people to boost savings and be better prepared for retirement.

Too often, workers are living paycheck to paycheck and are not saving sufficiently, Cheney said.

Last year, Americans' personal savings rate dropped to its lowest point since the Great Depression. The dismal state of savings comes as a big wave of baby boomers will soon start retiring.

Oh, and by the way, you might remember that your "boss" Baby Bush told everyone to go out and shop after 9/11. That it was their duty as patriotic Americans to keep spending to "save" our economy.

You make me SICK!

Americans can't save, every penny they make goes to pay the bills, especially due to the higher cost of oil and gas, and the higher credit card minimum payments you forced through to help your rich cronies. Money isn't a problem for you or your base, but it is to everyone else.

If you weren't so OUT OF TOUCH WITH AMERICA, you'd know that.

19. Save WHAT?
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 11:55 AM by LiberalEsto
Since the Evil Empire took over in 2001, the cost of everything has skyrocketed.

Gasoline
Fuel oil
Natural gas
Housing
Health care
Prescription drugs
Property taxes
Utility taxes and surcharges
College tuitions
Transportation
Food
Credit card interest rates
The federal deficit
and pretty much everything else.

Wages have not increased. In many cases wage increases have been eaten up by inflation.

Where does Mr. "Let them eat cake" think most Americans can find even a few spare dollars to save? Especially now that he and his cronies have looted America for the past five years.

35. What are you implying-- that our veep may be a little out of touch?
Why, how could that be? He's a regular guy.:sarcasm:

I'm old enough to remember when a checking account was something fortunate people had, because checking accounts required having money left over at the end of the month and the ability to wait a few days for a paycheck to clear before paying those bills.

I wish there was a way we could strip Cheney of all his assets and belongings for just one month and let him see what it's like to do low wage work and live check to check.

Cheney is right that people need to start saving if they are able because he and the W gang are bankrupting our future.

Yup--they spend too much on booze, drugs, cigarettes, unnecessary luxuries paid by credit cards...if ONLY workers saved more, then everything will be peachy keen.

So to recap, the average marginalized worker is now 'tasked' with economic recovery--so don't bug my buddy the Prez, my companies and our pals.

40. The sad thing is that the wealthy will use this kind of thinking to say
"It's not my problem there is no middle class. Those people don't save any of their money, so don't bother me with their problems."

It's the same as blaming the poor for being poor.

This message by Cheney is not meant for us but for his investor class so they can live their lives of luxury without a guilty conscience.

I don't listen to wing nut radio very much but I'll bet today everyone of the wing nut hosts are repeating Cheney's words.

What is really happening here is a rebuilding of the class system in this country. The wealthy ruling class and the working poor who support them will be all there is left soon.

49. Typical attitude of a wealthy repuke.
I have a friend from way back whose parents were loaded. They died and left her a pile of money. When my father-in-law died the first words out of her mouth were "Now you'll have to pay those awful estate taxes." In reality, he left behind very little, but people who are well off are blind to the realities of the real world and forget that most people struggle just to get by. Cheney is clearly in that category.

50. PsyOps Cheney tells Americans, "Be unhappy."
This is a recurring theme over the years. I don't know how many times I've read in the news, since I was a child, that Americans need to save more.

Is it some kind of psychological manipulation? You know, put everyone in an economic culture where only a few can prosper, and then tell everyone that what they're doing isn't good enough.

It kinda reminds me of the carrot that is kept just out of reach. Like it's designed to remind us of what we don't have, to keep us unsatisfied and unhappy. Pursuit of happiness. Pursue harder Americans. Pursue. Pursue. Pursue.

Never mind that most of you won't make it, never mind that we really want to you pursue without achieving, nevermind that we take most of the fruits of your labor. Never mind the economic system will only reward a small minority.

Work harder, harder! Save more, more!

It's your fault.

Those with big fat bank accounts probably get a nice warm fuzzy when reading this tripe, a real ego boost.

53. Hey, dickweed,
I'd love to save. Really! If I made the kind of money you do, I don't see a problem! However, reality strikes and - well, what do you know - food, heat, gas, insurance ... they seem to get in my way.

as opposed to what you've done....STEAL. I am thinking I need to committe some nice white collar crime that will get me time at Club Fed. Free room, board, and healthcare...sounds like a way to streach those retirement dollars...

60. What an idiot
Yeah, I'd love to save, dickweed. But since the tech bubble burst in 2001, I've been laid off twice, lost everything in my 401K (thanks Enron), my pay's been cut by 50%. Now, I have to help pay for my sister's meds because Medicare Part D won't cover them, and I have to help support my senior citizen mother, becaue HER stocks all went down the tubes, too, and she can't live on Social Security alone.

God, the gall of that idiot makes me want to puke.

61. Kind of hard when an emergency room visit and a few surgeries wipes out
your life savings. I HAD health insurance and $80,000 in the bank. Between healthcare cost my insurance refused to pay and eight months of unemployment, I'm now $17,000 in debt. Not atypical in BushCo's America; I'd hate to think of what would have happened had I not had savings to begin with (all earned under CLINTON, of course).

62. Reagan started the war on savings
Prior to his tax "reform", savings interest was tax-free up to a certain amount. This encouraged savings. Today all savers are penalized with a double whammy. Interest is taxed plus inflation reduces the real value of what you've saved.

Of course, few have much discretionary income to save...

67. What a Fucking Idiot.
So he thinks that everyone in this country is able to save after outsourcing all of the jobs
and him and his greedy corporate goons screwing up the economy?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would guess that at this point 75% of the country
is forced to live from paycheck to paycheck.

Are these people really THAT stupid that they see everyone is this country as financially well off?

113. Let's see, you Reaganite conservaturd . . .
Between me needing a new bathroom because my current one is a moldy deathtrap, me needing basement waterproofing because my foundation is getting stairstep cracks, little triple-digit emergencies or unexpecteds that pop up almost monthly, the increased cost of gas, food, utilities, school, books, day care, auto repairs, etc, my miniscule tax return (because SOMEone's gotta fund the rich and pay for their oil wars, might as well be schmucks like ME!), getting no child support, having to have a car note on a used 2003 Corolla because the wife's '92 Nissan was practically on $200/mo life support and it just wasn't worth it, the fact that both of us have to work and are going no place really slow, our salaries that are losing big time to rising inflation, costs and taxes . . . I'd say I could save approximately BUPKIS PER MONTH!!!!

Allow me to be the first to volunteer to put this fleshy snarling ballbag out of his misery . . .

had to save a damn dime. They just take other people's money and pass it on to their heirs. Living pay check to pay check is how most lower income people make it. There is nothing left to save after paying high gasoline prices to the companies that enrich those who are giving the advice to save.
