Takeover Threat: Philippine National Police chief warns media
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 07:02 PM by IndianaGreen
The situation is spiralling out of control as Gloria Arroyo's jackbooted thugs attempt to smash any public criticism of the regime. Why the silence from the White House? Arroyo and Bush are personal friends and allies, that's why!

IN A BOLD WARNING, the Philippine National Police yesterday said it would take over any media organization that would not follow "standards set by the government" during the state of national emergency.

A government team will examine the editorial contents of newspapers and the news or views aired by broadcast stations to see if these conform to the standards, according to PNP Director General Arturo Lomibao.

"We will recommend based on our evaluation," Lomibao said in a press conference, adding that the PNP would work in cooperation with other government agencies which he did not name.

He appointed the PNP spokesperson, Sr. Supt. Samuel Pagdilao, to serve as "liaison officer" between the media and the police.

"If they (the news groups) do not follow the standards-and the standards are if they would contribute to instability in the government, if they do not subscribe to what is in General Order No. 5 and Presidential Proclamation No. 1017--we will recommend (a takeover)," Lomibao said.

1. Of course the Bush administration will be watching this closely...........
to see what kind of power the Arroyo administration will be able to summons over the Philippine press, as in a total real news blackout. The Philippines must be backward, having a few news outlets which haven't been sold out already to the Bush-friendly government. :sarcasm:

From the article posted by I.G.:
They include "actions which are hurting the Philippine state by obstructing governance, including hindering the growth of the economy and sabotaging the people's confidence in government, and their faith in the future of this country," he said, reading from a portion of the order.

Takeover of Tribune

Lomibao said he would recommend that the PNP take over the operations of The Daily Tribune, a broadsheet critical of the Arroyo administration.

That means the government will review the reports to be published by the paper, but it will not be closed down, he said.

Lomibao said the paper had been engaged in "a concerted effort and systematic conspiracy with known elements out to bring down the duly constituted government since May 2004."

"(This) renders it a clear and present danger to the country and its people," he said.
(snip)

He said the Tribune was targeted because its past headlines showed that it had a tendency toward leftist and rightist propaganda to bring down the government.
(snip)
(my emphasis....)

2. The filipino people will NOT stand for this lawlessness
on the part of the tyrant Gloria Arroyo - memories from Ferdinand are still fresh in their minds and they will stop her in her tracks.

8. "Irony" is the right word. It's spelled out again in this article:
Philippines police detain govt critics

Associated Press

MANILA, Feb. 25. — Police today raided the offices of a newspaper and detained several prominent critics of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, a day after she declared a state of emergency to quash a coup plot.

Several hundred government opponents gathered at a Roman Catholic Mass, where they questioned the legitimacy of the Emergency and vowed more protests to force Mrs Arroyo from office.

But with rallies banned, the streets were otherwise quiet on a day when Filipinos normally would have been marking the 20th anniversary of the “people power” uprising that forced dictator Ferdinand Marcos into exile on 25 February,1986.
Early today, police barged into the offices of The Daily Tribune and confiscated editorial material and a bundle of newspapers headlining Mrs Arroyo’s declaration. After the raid, they posted police at the door but it was not clear if they intended to close the office, the paper’s publisher, Mr Ninez Cacho Olivarez, said.

The newspaper, owned by Mr Olivarez’s family, has been among the most critical of Mrs Arroyo, and has recently reported alleged military plots to oust her.

5. So now coups are good
and elections can be ignored.

I have a really hard time keeping up with the left's position on rule of law.

Unless it really is about ideology and political agendas, and those who will support any means necessary to promote their agenda.

6. She is being kicked out for STEALING ELECTION
I have been following this for quite some time now

These people have risen against the ELECTION FRAUD she committed in the 2004 elections there. To think Americans used to refer to these people as "Natives" that needed the USA to lead them.

They saw right through Black Box voting and the Philippine Supreme Court disallowed the voting machines. Now they find out GMA used election officials to fix the elections and they are rising up against her as well.

THEY DIFFINITELY MAKE AMERICANS LOOK LIKE A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY COMPARED TO 1 OF THE POOREST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

9. There was also an audio tape of Arroyo and hubby bribing
election officials. Her hubby fled to the US to avoid the glare of the press.
