Democrats hammer Bush on Dubai ports deal (radio address)
WASHINGTON - Democrats Saturday accused President Bush of being casual with U.S. security as they warned of risks from a deal in which an Arab, state-owned company would gain control of six key U.S. ports.

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, in the Democratic weekly radio address, urged Bush to pose tough questions during a delay of Dubai Ports World’s $6.8 billion acquisition of P&O, even as a top White House official said there was no need to re-open the government’s review.

“We cannot afford to let this administration be stubborn in their mistakes and casual about our security,” Corzine said. “Every homeland security expert identifies protecting our nation’s ports as one of our greatest unmet security challenges.”
...
Democrats and some members of Bush’s own Republican Party have hammered the administration for approving the transaction, citing evidence that two of the Sept. 11 hijackers came from the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a part, and that al Qaeda funding went via UAE banks.

The White House bristled at any suggestion that Bush was lax on national security.

2. If the Dems were smart, they would run with issue for all it's worth, I

think it's a winner because it typifies all of the hypocrisy that this administration stands for.

They need to keep it simple though, don't get to many facts involved. This may be a problem though because the Dems usually have a tendency for truth and details and the Reps are pretty much a faith based group.

Lots of folks like that bumper sticker mentality. It sure worked well for Reagan.

JUST SAY NO! remember LOL

7. Mark me up for truth and details.
Just because it may bring political advantage to Democrats does not make me see this as any less crass and deliberately exploiting ignorance. Just because Bush did it first (within the last few years mind you - this is hardly new to American history, and I laughed when I read a British article saying Bush "invented" this technique - ha!) does not make it right.

But like anyone's gonna care what I think.

13. And it will work, too...
...because the Dems will give up when the media gets on board. The Dems can hold another basement hearing on CSPAN8, but they will lose this fight, too, because they aren't in it to win. They're just competing for the same dollars that are now ensuring that the deal goes through.

No offense meant to real Democratic opposition, such as it is. I just wish that your party hadn't already abandoned you.

6. hypothetical Bush*Co response
It's a corporation willing to buy in a tax-generating transaction! Money will change hands! Corporations are good! There aren't any bad corporations: there are only bad people, we label them terrorists.

Citizens who oppose this transaction threaten national security.

(okay, so maybe all the statements aren't precisely hypothetical)

14. "....urged Bush to pose tough questions"
LOL.

“But what we need is not a token delay, but a serious review,”

Please.

The Dems are NEVER going to get it. Even when they try to sound "tough," they end up sounding pathetic.

Is it any wonder that Bush and the far right abuses them at every opportunity?

16. On Channel 13, Central Florida, they took Corizine's words out of
context. The clip from Corzine was something like, president Bush says there is nothing to worry about, and left it like that. It made it sound like he was supporting Bush.
