Republicans defy Bush on ports management
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=db3b1615c950052b

Despite U.S. President George Bush's assurances, congressional Republicans are adamant an Arabic company should not be operating six U.S. seaports.

Both Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., rejected Bush's call to allow the deal between British-based P&O and Dubai Ports World to go through early next month and said they remain committed to delaying it, The Washington Post reported.

The congressional defiance is unprecedented in Bush's presidency, the newspaper said.

Republican lawmakers said they have been flooded with phone calls and letters from constituents encouraging them to fight Bush over the port deal, even though Bush has threatened to veto any congressional delay.

Its the first time they have ever said no to Bush and I still think Bush will get his way...

its a smoke screen...

2. People are pissed about this
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 10:55 PM by notadmblnd
We've spent the last 5 years being told that we must be afraid of the brown skin people in the middle east. We've been told by this administration that our way of life is so hated by them that they want to kill us and we must preemptively fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here.... and now they want us to give them the keys to the gates of our cities?

People understand this one.. they finally get it and they are pissed.

3. Yes, we are more than pissed!
Purse and luggage checks, wanding, shoes removal, constant ID checking on any American flying, but W is allowing a foreign government, with ties to 9/11 and OBL to run our ports?

Anyone who votes Republican is a total masochistic idiot.

5. My fear is that the
GOP has figured out away to "have it's cake and eat it too". The ports deal will go through whether or not the American people agree with it. There is no way I can be convinced the administration did not anticipate the "shit storm" that this sale would create. So what to do, it's also the mid-term election year and this could us an advantage. You have some big name GOPpers come out against it, really appear to take the WH to task, while the deal proceeds as planned. This way they can say look we tried he wouldn't listen' we are the party of Strong National Security. the wright-wing talking heads- Noonan etal say the proper things They're being knee-jerk, disloyal ect and there you have it * (who's not running for re-election anytime soon) takes the political hit and those who's heads are on the block get a free pass. And as an extra added bonus they can refute the *bots, lockstep thing also

8. Team Bush have screwed up almost everything they've done for 5 years.
I have no doubt that this is any different. Bush has just been lucky to have a mainstream media that kisses his ass (plus an iron grip on his own media exposure). Plus a very wimpy group of Dems who undercut the true progressives, making opposition difficult.

Remember over the past 5 years, thinking "This is it! This is finally the issue that connects with the public." (Downing Street minutes, Plame Gate, no WMDs found, Prescripion Drug plan, Hurricane Katrina, it goes on and on).

Somehow Bush has been teflon, and nothing really sticks (at least with his base, anyway. Everyone I know thinks he's been awful). Well maybe Dumbya's teflon is wearing off. These idiots definitely screw up all the time though, and the ports deal is no different... just add it to a long list.

I appreciate your cynicism, but I don't think this ports controversey is something that Team Bush planned.

10. The neocon talking heads are the problem
Rush is already saying "What's the problem". Hannity hasn't made up his mind yet, but does think it should be investigated. We should get an idea by the questions asked at the investigation. A month or 2 of these talking heads deciding the port deal is OK could really swing things, unfortunately.

12. UAE shouldnt have control of our ports its just so logical
I think Republicans have to make a show of being outraged because they need to be elected... It definitely puts them in the middle of the firestorm

The vote will be interesting...

21. Regardless of the merits of the policy itself,
this is sooooo politically tone-deaf across the political spectrum that its hard to believe that Rove signed off on it. Is he distracted by something I wonder?
