S.D. House Approves Abortion Ban Bill
PIERRE, S.D. - State lawmakers voted Friday to ban nearly all abortions in South Dakota and sent the measure to the governor, who said he is inclined to sign it.

Under the legislation, doctors in South Dakota would face up to five years in prison for performing an abortion unless it was necessary to save the woman's life.

The bill directly targets Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. State lawmakers believe the nation's highest court is now more likely to reverse itself on the abortion issue because of the recent appointments of Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

Planned Parenthood, which operates the only clinic performing abortions in South Dakota, has pledged to challenge the measure in court if Gov. Mike Rounds signs it into law.

6. making it illegal will not eliminate it
however, eliminating th eneed is not on their aganda, stirring up the base for this years election is far more important than the health and welfare of any citizen.

2. I hope they do. Then we can fence SD up and put an effin lid on it.
If we let them go crazy one by one...we can set up a situation where they'd have to go back to pioneer living to survive and maybe more hunting accidents could cull the herd.

7. Those Far Wrongers who want to take over South Carolina
oughta head to South Dakota instead. Then we can wipe our hands of the whole bizness.

(Sorry, SD-ers.)

3. South Dakota. I will never set foot in that state, again.
EVER. I will not purchase anything from South Dakota, I will not travel through there on the way back East on the 90. Their tourist attractions should dry up and rot from neglect and disinterest.

How the fuck is it compassionate conservatism to FORCE a woman to have a rapists child? How it is Christian to force a girl to bear the child of a relative that molested her? And.. when the child is born, the rapist or molester has shared parental rights, and HAS to be in the child and mother's life. Oh. I see.. they have to give it up for adoption then. But.. the "father" can sue to stop the adoption.

Remember a WOMAN who is a DEMOCRAT sponsored this bill. This is just outrageous. No one is Pro-abortion. But we're pro-choice. People think that voting for Bush or not voting didn't make a difference in the last few elections? They're dead wrong as Roe v. Wade will be revisited by the Supreme Court. COUNT ON IT.

8. It wasn't a "WOMAN who is a DEMOCRAT"...

... that sponsored this bill. You seem to have Kate Looby of Planned Parenthood mixed up with the cheesy lawyer from Brandon, SD, Roger Hunt, that sponsored this and did the "wording".

Kate Looby is a great person. Her dad is a retired ob/gyn doctor in Sioux Falls. Kate and NARAL have a christmas chocolate party to raise funds with each year, and I look forward to the great chocolate sweets offered for sale.

4. And that was that. *Clears throat*
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

5. The new law is too outrageous.
It will never pass muster in the supreme court. That was the problem with the law in Kansas.

9. The only silver lining in this
by making no exceptions for rape or incest, it underscores the cruelty of the right wing for all to see.

I'll never forget the banner that was on the stage at the Republican National Convention. It said, "Republicans, People of Compassion."

Right.

16. me neither.
Besides, the big ad campaign that's been all over my local TV stations (in Chicago) depicts only white people "enjoying" all the state has to offer. Apparently, people of color are not welcome, which is just as well. If the gov. signs the bill, I will write off SD as a place to visit pretty much forever. too scary...

12. This is just the start.
Unfortunately this mind set is spreading all over the country.

Remember, even california couldn't help attacking gay marriage.

btw, this will spread to the gays and immigrants too. Right now, they're just attacking women.

14. SD Ranks Near Bottom on Infant Mortality, Children in Poverty
I'm trying to find the thread that states that South Dakota ranks near the bottom on infant mortality and children living in poverty. You would think that they "pro-lifers" would be more concerned about saving kids that are BORN rather than banning abortions.

15. Anybody notice how SD ads are now saturating the local media?
The state is EXPLOITING the House ruling for economic gain. It's sooooooooooo transparent.

Personally, I think Stevie Wonder should sue the ad agency 'cause the jingle seems awfully similar to one of the cuts off his new CD.
